Head out into the Lake District which offers a plethora of walks, hikes and cycle rides so whether you want vertiginous mountains and hills or more gentle, undulating fields and dales, you’ve come to the right place and will be rewarded with some breath-taking views along the way.

Situated in west Cumbria close to the start of the River Derwent, Workington is an ancient market and port town which has a great collection of shops, bars and two theatres, as well as history dating back to Roman times. Nearby Curwen Hall is an impressive ruin, which was originally built around a pele tower that dates back to the 14th century and was used to shelter Mary Queen of Scots on her last flight to Scotland before her execution. More recently, Workington was known for the production of high quality iron ore and mining, and more can be found out about the town’s industrial history at the maritime museum based on the cliffs in nearby Whithaven. The western side of the Lake District National Park can be reached in less than half an hour’s drive and to the west is the Solway Firth which is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and to the east are the Lakeland Hills. Workington is a hidden gem in the heart of Cumbria.
