Reviewers unanimously commend the cottage for its spotless condition, noting it as exceptionally clean and well-maintained, contributing to a comfortable and inviting stay.

The location is praised for its breathtaking views and tranquility, though some guests note it is a bit remote and a fair distance from the Lake District, requiring a car for travel.

The thoughtfulness of the hosts is evident through the provision of welcome gifts and the well-prepared guest information. While gifts are mentioned and appreciated, they are a kind gesture and not a guaranteed amenity.

About this property

This magnificent, detached cottage is located in Bowness-on-Solway near Wigton and Carlisle, on the edge of the Solway Coast. With mesmerising, uninterrupted views stretching across the bay to the Solway Firth and Scotland beyond, this cottage makes an ideal base for families and couples exploring this charming corner of Cumbria. Set solely on the ground floor, the cottage has two cosy bedrooms, a luxury bathroom with a double-ended bath, and a superb shower room. There is an open plan living area, beautifully furnished and equipped ensuring your stay will be perfect. The dramatic scenery is brought inside with large, feature French windows opening out on to a beautiful decking area, so no matter what the weather you will always be able to admire the scenery.

From the cottage, steps enjoy direct access down to the shore where in season you may observe the unique and traditional style of fishing in the Solway Firth called Haaf Netters. The Hadrian’s Wall Path National Trail starts in the village and stretches right across the country to the east coast, and whilst guests may wish to walk the 73 miles to Wallsend, having a superb pub serving delicious fare at the very start may delay your departure! A wonderful way to explore the Solway Coast, an Area of Outstanding National Beauty and World Heritage Site, is by bicycle and although the Hadrian’s Cycleway also runs through the village, there are also numerous other circular routes on hand.

Wildlife lovers can embrace the local nature reserves with both Dumbrugh Moss and the South Solway Mosses close by, and positioned right on the edge of the estuary at this Bowness-on-Solway cottage, you are already in a renowned World Ramsar site for marine birds. Being close to the border of Scotland, Carlisle, known as the border city, is well worth a visit, or how about a day at the races? Cross the border just into Scotland and visit Gretna Green, just over 20 miles away. Whatever your reason to visit this fascinating area and this fabulous cottage, you will undoubtedly wish you had found this idyllic location years ago and will look forward to enjoying the superb accommodation again and again!

With a charter granted in 1262, the traditional Cumbrian market town of Wigton still holds a market each Tuesday in the covered market hall. This lovely town is a popular centre for shopping, pubs and restaurants, as well as for other activities such as theatre, bowls, swimming, tennis and other sports. The Lord Melvyn Bragg novel, 'A Time to Dance', featured the town of Thurston, which was based on Wigton and the local area. A lovely base for a holiday exploring Cumbria and the Scottish Borders.

Even TV in bedroom a definite bonus for us as we like to go to bed early. Nothing not to like here, already booked for 2025

Definitely revisit, but one note to add, take supplies with you, pubs in every village but no shop for 4 miles.

Just a couple of issues. Heating is controlled by the owner and sometimes it was cold. Front shower area needs attention as there’s a funny smell from drainage. TV in bedrooms could not connect any other devices. No shops in the area for 10 miles. Pub food nearby was great. Had all facilities needed and very clean.
