Starboard Light is a well-received cottage in Lymington, praised for its cleanliness, charming decor, and prime location close to amenities and the harbour. Guests appreciate the cosy atmosphere, comfortable furnishings, and the thoughtful touches such as a welcome pack. While some noted minor issues with facilities and road noise, the overall sentiment is positive, with many expressing a desire to return.
The cottage is consistently described as clean and well-presented. A few isolated comments mention areas that could be improved, such as window condensation and a leaky toilet, but these do not detract significantly from the overall high standards of cleanliness.
The location is highly regarded due to its proximity to the town centre, quay, and local amenities. The convenience of nearby car parks and the inclusion of a parking pass are frequently mentioned. Some guests noted the busy road and lack of private parking, but these were known in advance and did not majorly impact the positive views on location.
Guests find the cottage cosy and the bed comfortable, with a few suggesting improvements such as softer sofas and better pillows. The presence of road noise and steep stairs were minor discomforts for some.
The cottage is well-equipped, with many guests satisfied with the amenities provided. However, there are suggestions for additional facilities such as a washing machine over a dishwasher, and comments on the need for better seating and heating options. Some maintenance issues like condensation and a non-functioning fan were also noted.
While guests frequently mention and appreciate the welcome pack and other thoughtful gestures, there is not enough information to determine if such gifts are a standard offering for all stays. Therefore, a score cannot be accurately provided.
'Starboard Light’ is a quaint terraced cottage full of maritime charm. Nestled amidst the hustle-and-bustle of the riverside market town of Lymington, just a stone’s throw from the High Street, it offers a cosy contemporary home away from home, with everything you could possibly need during your break. Set in the old Georgian part of the town directly on Captains Row, you will be perfectly situated to make the most of Lymington’s pubs, weekly Saturday market, famous marinas, coastal walks, boutique shops, restaurants and the historic and picturesque cobbled Quay Hill and Town Quay - all of these together with the New Forest National Park and the Isle of Wight both being within easy reach, 10 minutes’ drive and a short hop on the local ferry respectively, you will have lots of options for exploring this fantastic area where coast meets Forest. Upon entering the cottage, you will find an open-plan living area, where you can rustle up a home-cooked meal, dine in style and then curl up and unwind on the sofa, in front of the fire. As the evening draws to a close, the stairs up from the kitchen lead to the spacious airy bedroom, with its king-size bed, crisp cotton bedding and a large sash window where in the morning you can check out the views over the rooftops to the river and neighbouring marinas - a beautiful view to wake to and watch as you have your coffee. Adjoining the bedroom is a well-appointed bathroom, with bath tub and shower above. ‘Starboard Light’ is a wonderful retreat for a couple’s break to this part of Hampshire.

The wifi connection was poor and every hour or so buffered, meaning I could not watch on demand TV or use zoom. I would not recommend relying on the wifi if you want to work from there. I struggled with the parking clock. I could never get parking at the small Gosport parking area and had to change every 20 hrs between Cannon Street and St Thomas street. For stays of a few days I imagine this is fine, but for me having to every day move my car back and forwards was hugely annoying (and wasted 30 minutes every morning especially if i dont want to leave at 8am). It meant having to plan your car usage strategically: either parking just before closing to get a lie in (consequently parking and walking around a car park in the dark) or waking up early before the car park opens. This was not an enjoyable experience and felt like a hassle for a holiday. The property description should accurately state what free means i.e "free public parking for 20 hours each day - guests will have to move their car each day to a different car park due to the no return rules." The road directly out front is extremely busy and very noisy. This is fine if you are planning on not staying in during the day and definitely explains why children are not permitted at the house. Finally, whilst it says pet friendly, I would give caution, as the road out front is extremely busy and has a very small pedestrian pathway. I had to keep my dog on a very tight lead and step out in front first for safety.

The Welcome Pack was a lovely surprise. We appreciated having an e-mail from Michaela before we left with all the useful information. The location just couldnât be better. We hope to return to Lymington and will certainly plan that around the availability of Starboard Light.

Parking clock was excellent, with space a few hundred yards away. Cottage spotless and decor very nice. Had everything in it you could want. Stepping out of the front door you need to be careful, as very small pavement. Communication and instructions for key were excellent and a helpful file with info. on the table. Can definitely recommend. Thank you Michaela.
