Ventnor is a Victorian seaside town situated on the southern side of the Isle of Wight, right in the heart of the famous Undercliff, much of which is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Visitors will find a great variety of lovely seaside tea shops, pubs and restaurants dotted along the esplanade serving locally caught fish and locally brewed ales. There are also some quirky and bespoke shops, a park and a children’s paddling pool. The town, which for the most part is built on the steep hill leading to the beach, retains its original seaside charm and makes a great day out for all the family.

Sheltered from the north by St Boniface Downs, owned by the National Trust, Ventnor benefits from its own micro-climate which provides an ideal haven for a variety of flora and fauna. The neighbouring village of Bonchurch lies just to the east of Ventnor and is renowned for its literary connections; writers and poets such as Dickens, Stackpole and Swinburn all resided here for a time. Dickens remarked, ‘the prettiest place I ever saw in my life, at home or abroad’.

Explore the rock pools, enjoy great local walks and easy access to the many attractions the Isle of Wight has to offer. Outdoor pursuits on the island are well catered for and include horse riding, fishing, cycling, paragliding, water sports and golf. There are numerous attractions for all ages across the island including The Needles with its chairlift, amusement park, boat rides, lighthouse and coloured sands of Alum Bay. You can also visit Queen Victoria’s favourite holiday residence, Osborne House and its gardens, as well as Blackgang Chine, the oldest themed attraction in the UK, Ventnor Botanical Gardens, Tapnell Farm Park, Carisbrooke Castle or the sailing towns of Yarmouth and Cowes. Beach ½ mile. Shop, pub and restaurant 100 yards.

Stayed here before and just as good as the last time. Great central location to local pub, and town centre restaurants. Well equipped. Parking is available on site but have to reverse down a tight driveway. But if you prefer can find nearby on street parking.

We had a wonderful stay in Hill House bakery and would recommend it, without hesitation. Our hosts were so lovely and nothing was too much trouble. We had a friendly welcome from Kristie and then both Sharon and Anna came to see us - such a lovely family. They replied to messages very quickly. We didn't have any problems as they had thought of everything. The space itself is perfect. We loved the history, especially the old oven in the bathroom. The cottage is very well equipped, and we had a lovely welcome basket - even an Easter egg each for our boys, which was so kind. There were lots of recommendations in the detailed welcome pack, which we took advantage of. We very much enjoyed being so close to Crave ice cream and the Crab and Lobster Tap - delicious food in the pub, including great veggie options, with cheese! Crave ice cream changes daily and is a must try (shut Tuesday and Wednesday, as is the butchers.)We loved everything about Hill House bakery and it felt like a home from home. We enjoyed using the BBQ and courtyard (room for an Easter egg hunt!) and the rooms were comfortable. (My youngest liked his "den bed" tucked away in an alcove. The location is excellent, less than 10 minutes from the beach and very close to the town. Handy to have parking (my husband was fine with the steep drive, but I wouldn't have fancied it.) There is free parking on the road anyway, so not an issue. We have already talked about booking again for next year. Thank you Sharon and Anna, we have had a wonderful time.
