Guests say

Aeolus House in Dartmouth is praised for its stunning views, central location, and well-equipped kitchen. Guests appreciate the property's charm, cleanliness, and the inclusion of a parking permit. While some find the multiple floors and stairs challenging, the views and homely touches are considered compensatory. The property's proximity to local attractions and amenities adds to its appeal, despite some minor maintenance issues.

Most guests found Aeolus House clean and well-presented, with high standards of cleanliness upon arrival. However, a few reviews mentioned areas where cleanliness could be improved, such as dirty pans and a soiled mattress, slightly lowering the score.

The location is highly praised for its central position in Dartmouth, offering easy access to shops, amenities, and stunning harbour views. The convenience of a parking permit is frequently mentioned, enhancing the appeal of the property's location.

Guests generally find the house comfortable, with cosy bedrooms and a welcoming atmosphere. Some concerns about steep stairs and the difficulty of accessing beds due to sloped ceilings are noted, which slightly affects the comfort score.

The property is well-equipped, particularly the kitchen, and guests are pleased with the inclusion of a parking permit. However, there are comments about the need for maintenance, such as updating the ensuite shower and fixing a clothes airer, which impacts the facilities score.

While guests mention the homely touches and decorative pieces, there is insufficient information regarding gifts or additional thoughtful gestures to accurately score this category. Therefore, the score is set to null.

About this property

In an ideal, central location for exploring the harbour town of Dartmouth, Aeolus House is located on Newcomen Road, just a minute or so (mostly level) walk from boutique shops, galleries, restaurants and tea rooms, as well as the picturesque River Dart.

Aeolus House is a mid terrace cottage, well presented and furnished to provide good quality holiday accommodation over four floors. The cottage is accessed directly from Newcomen Road at the ground floor level with access to a small but cosy sitting room with leather sofa and chair, LCD TV and DVD player, providing a fantastic holiday base all year round. On the lower ground floor level is a very well equipped kitchen with a range of white units and appliances, plus a hardwood dining table and seating for six guests. There are two bedrooms in total; on the second floor is a master bedroom with a King-size bed and en suite shower room. This comfortable room extends out to a sunny sitting area with a Juliet balcony boasting stunning views towards the River Dart. On the first floor is a cosy double bedroom. In addition to the master en suite is a family bathroom.

Perfectly located for a coastal break, the Start Bay coastline is nearby and Blackpool Sands beach is just a 5-10 minute drive away, whilst Woodlands Leisure Park is just three miles outside of Dartmouth. For those travelling with a dog, several of the popular Start Bay beaches and eateries are dog friendly.

Dartmouth lies on the banks of the beautiful River Dart in the popular and picturesque South Hams area of South Devon. Located within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and close to the stunning Start Bay coastline, Dartmouth is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Devon. It offers a stunning waterfront, ancient narrow streets lined with boutique shops, restaurants and art galleries plus many popular events such as the annual Dart Music Festival, Dartmouth Food Festival and the Port of Dartmouth Royal Regatta. This historic town boasts interesting landmarks, such as Dartmouth Castle, the Britannia Royal Naval College, and the National Trust’s Greenway House just a short ferry ride away. There are many interesting cycling and walking routes around Dartmouth, including the South West Coast Path, the Dart Valley Trail and plenty of quiet country lanes. A trip on the Dartmouth Steam Railway through the rolling countryside to Paignton is a must, and so is a boat or ferry trip across to Kingswear, on to Brixham, or down the river to the village of Dittisham. For those seeking sandy beaches, there is a wide choice in the South Hams area such as Blackpool Sands and Slapton Sands, both extremely popular beaches just a stone's throw from Dartmouth.

Beautiful view from the top bedroom. Five stars for facilities and maintenance. Can only give four stars for comfort due to beds with springs protruding through thin mattresses and a strong “drain” smell in the basement kitchen. Despite this, a very enjoyable week.

  • Rowena

A lovely base for our visit.

  • Susan

We enjoyed our stay. The only criticism was the lack of handrail on the lower flight of stairs to the kitchen. We found this potentially dangerous.
