The wooded cliffs at Bolt Tail form a backdrop to this sandy cove on what is renowned as one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in the South Hams. These holiday cottages are set within 100 yards of the sandy beach – an unrivalled position for enjoying the seaside, but also perfect for fishing, sailing and water-skiing (with a dinghy-launching slip 200 yards away, and facilities for larger boats at nearby Salcombe).

The cottages are in the centre of this charming seaside village, with its pretty thatched cottages, inns, restaurants and small shop within a short walk. The South Devon coastal footpath winds along the cliffs and through Hope Cove between Salcombe and Thurlestone, with opportunities for magnificent walking amongst glorious coastal scenery. The maritime attractions continue slightly further afield. Salcombe, 4 miles away, is one of the most prestigious sailing centres in the country. It offers extensive sandy beaches, too, and a wide choice of fascinating shops, boutiques and restaurants in its quaintly winding narrow streets. The estuary here is a kaleidoscope of brightly coloured craft of all kinds at their moorings – a paradise for sailing enthusiasts. Thurlestone, 2 miles to the west, can be reached either by car or via the coastal path. It boasts yet more expanses of golden sands, a regular feature of this lovely coastline. In addition, it has a superb cliff-top links golf course, edged by sandy coves, tennis courts and picturesque streets of thatched cottages overlooking the bay.

Kingsbridge, the ‘capital’ of the South Hams, has a good choice of interesting shops, a museum and a sports centre with squash, badminton and bowling. Boating and diving trips can be arranged in the Salcombe Estuary, and boats are available for hire. Within easy driving distance are the historic cities of Plymouth and Exeter and Kitley Caves. The wide-open spaces and breathtaking scenery of the Dartmoor National Park are less than an hour by car, and there are many National Trust properties, stately homes and interesting gardens within a short drive. Anchor Cottages are set in a little terrace in the village. They have been designed to offer ‘upside-down’ accommodation, with first floor living rooms. Comfortably furnished, each has a small first floor sitting-out area with furniture. They are ideally located for a Devon holiday by the sea. Beach 1 mile. Shop 50 yards.

'Pirates Cove' is one of a terrace of what are primarily holiday lets. (Possibly in the same ownership). It is approached by driving down a narrow, what is now a gravel road adjacent to a public car park - which is the view from the windows. Parking infront of the cottage is not permissable and the designated parking area for 5 vehicles, was very tight and the most cars that managed to park in the area was three.Rubbish bins and loose rubbish in the area did not help. The frontage of the 'cottage' is dirty and disheveled. The sign' Pirates Cove' is difficult to spot as a consequnce. The electricity meter cupboard door is open and has obviuosly been like this for some time due to the accumulation of dirt inside. I tried to close this but was unable to. The door constantly bangs throughout the night when it is windy - which it was!The front door is old and the plastic coating is lifting off in several places. The door handle does not return to its natural position. Once inside the cottage, the carpets had been vacuumed and it was generally tidy. The room sizes were quite good and with plenty of room in the main living area. The equipment was adequate. There were plenty of glasses to drink from. Much of the crockery was chipped and some of the cutlery, whilst washed, had food residue on it. From here, it's eisier to say that it was obvious that there had been very little maintenace carried out or what could be considered as general cleaning. The beds were old and the mattresses thin which 'collapsed' when lay upon resulting with you grounding on the divan base. There was no smoke alarm - just the base, exposed electrical connections in the hall, missing and or dead light bulbs upstairs and the where the bulbs fitted into the light fitting, nearly all the covers to these were distored by heat and several exposed the connection between the base and the bulb so that when the light was on, live electrical connections were on view. Safe enough I suppose, unless someone tries to change a light bulb whilst the lights are switched on. We tried not to use the oven as it was dity and smelt when put on, also, in three out of the four times we did use the oven, it 'tripped' the main electricity switch.I can substantiate all of the factual elements of the above if required. The rest remains a subjective personal opinion.I cannot reccomend this property. This is a pity, as if properly cleaned, maintained and equipped and or modernised, this has the potential to be a comfortable holiday let.

Excellent location for the beach and local restaurants and pubs. Accommodation was spacious. Only things that let down the accommodation was how dated and old the furniture, fittings and carpets are. Apart from not being able to use the vacuum cleaner as it didn’t work it didn’t distract from a great holiday. The property definitely needs modernising.
