Gayle Farmhouse in Hawes is praised for its excellent location, comfort, and as a cosy base for exploring the Yorkshire Dales. Guests appreciate the well-equipped kitchen, welcoming pack, and the property's suitability for family stays and walking holidays. Some concerns over cleanliness and dated decor were noted, but overall experiences were positive, with repeat visits and intentions to return.
One review mentioned the property was not at the expected level of cleanliness upon arrival, suggesting room for improvement. However, no other reviews raised cleanliness issues, indicating this may not be a consistent problem.
The location is highly praised for its proximity to Hawes, walking routes, and local attractions. It is considered a great base for exploring the area, with positive mentions in nearly all reviews.
The property is described as comfortable and cosy, with a warm atmosphere and comfy beds. However, concerns about steep stairs and suitability for those with limited mobility slightly affect the score.
The property is well-equipped with household comforts and amenities, but some guests noted it appears dated and in need of renovation. The lack of a garden for pets and some impractical features like carpeted bathrooms are also mentioned.
Guests appreciated the welcome pack provided, which included essentials like milk, tea, and biscuits. It is noted that such gestures add to the experience, although it is understood that these are complimentary and not guaranteed.

We loved the Gayle cottage. We used it as home base for driving in the Dales. Loved breakfast at the creamery!!!

Very comfortable, warm stone built cottage; everything provided for a good week’s holiday. Great location for walking, with many walk options straight from the door. Hawes town just 10 minutes down the hill with good range pubs, shops and cafes. Very helpful information and welcoming pack.

My family and I (3 adults and 2 teenage boys) and two good dogs, stayed at Gayle Farm House for the last 10 days of the school summer holidays. This our first visit to Yorkshire, and we had a great holiday. The cottage is well located in the pretty village of Gayle with a beautiful beck running through. The town of Hawes is a short walk away with the Wensleydale Creamery on the way, which is well worth a visit! The cottage was not at the expected level of cleanliness when we arrived. However, the cottage was very well equipped with all household comforts and amenities. The 'welcome pack', with milk in the fridge, tea, coffee, a packet of biscuits and marmalade was gratefully received after a long journey. The cottage is very dated in the decor, furniture and fittings and looks to be in need of repair and renovation. The main stairs are very steep, with an extra step onto the main landing and another steep step down into the end double bedroom. Definitely not suitable for young children/disabled or persons with limited mobility. There is no garden despite being a pet friendly property. I wrongly assumed on booking that there would be a garden for the dogs. The nearest place to exercise dogs is a few hundred feet up the hill and through a style into fields. Not ideal when the dogs need to go out in the night. There is allocated parking outside the cottage's coal bunker. There is a 'spaghetti' of washing line hanging from the ceiling in the utility room, which is useless.A clothes 'horse' (indoor clothes dryer) would be better? Also, mind the splashing in the bathroom and kitchen as both rooms are carpeted, which does not dry out well. The cottage does provide a good central Base for visiting local attractions such as Fountains Abbey, Malham Cove, Ribblesdale Viaduct, Ingleton waterfalls and White Scar caves and in Gayle, The Gayle Mill is an excellent tour and open to visitors on Thursday only.In Hawes, we highly recommend The White Hart Inn and Wensleydale Creamery cafe for food but avoid The Crown pub.
