Hawes is a prominent market town in the North Yorkshire region of Richmondshire and is recognised as one of the tourism hotspots of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The village is situated between Buttertubs and Fleet Moss, making it an ideal base for walking and sightseeing Wensleydale and the neighbouring dales of Swaledale, Cotterdale, Dentdale, Garsdale, Wharfedale, and Chapel-le-Dale. Take a stroll along the neighbouring Hawes Town Trail, the Millennium Walk, the Pennine Way, or the River Ure. The English Tourist Board gave Hawes the Silver Award for "Best Day Trip" in 1998. Modern traffic has long since replaced coaches and horse pulled carts on its small lanes, but Tuesday market day in Hawes remains as bustling as ever, with a farmers' auction bringing sheep farmers from all over northern England. Traditional stores, cafes, and inns today serve a range of Dales visitors as well as the local people. The award-winning Wensleydale Creamery, made famous by the animated Wallace and Grommit films, is now available to the public so that visitors can see the famous cheese being made and enjoy the finished product in a friendly café. In the former station yard are the bustling National Park Centre and the Dales Countryside Museum. Marie Hartley and Joan Ingilby, two eminent Dales historians and authors, amassed a beautiful collection of artefacts from the Dales for display in the museum.

What a fantastic location - easy to walk to Hawes and to get directly out into the Dales. The staff were friendly and welcoming. The cottage was delightful and larger than we had anticipated, with the hot tub as a bonus. WIFI and TV at times a bit "flakey", but as we were there to enjoy the countryside it didn't matter that much. All in all, a great place to stay - we'll definitely book again!
