Situated at the entrance to Swaledale, the ancient market town of Richmond stands on a prominent hilltop site to the north of the River Swale. Its cobbled streets and narrow alleys or 'wynds' enshrine over nine centuries of busy history and unique character. The town grew up around its castle, a Norman fortress dating back to 1071, famously situated high above the river - indeed the name Richmond is derived from 'Riche-mont' meaning 'strong hill'. Today there are wonderful walks to be enjoyed such as the Castle Walk - a dramatic terrace walk beneath the castle walls - or alternatively walk alongside the River Swale where there are parks, safe paddling areas and small waterfalls to enjoy. Within the town, narrow streets and alleys radiate from the cobbled Market Place (which has a weekly market and monthly farmers’ market) and there are numerous shops, pubs and restaurants to enjoy. The town flourished in the 18th and 19th centuries and the resulting elegant Georgian architecture lines many of the old streets. The Georgian Theatre is one of the oldest surviving theatres in the country with visitors enjoying its regular productions all year round.

..dirty kitchen, previous occupants dirty linen on the bed and a leaky shower (unable to shower for the duration of our stay). Very poor response to our concerns. So disappointing

Postives of the property are a comfortable, large sitting room, comfortable beds & nice views of the abbey. The property manager was very helpful when we had issues with the WiFi. Negatives of the property was that there was zero information about the property & of the area. No information re appliances, where to park, heating, bins etc. Kitchen small & little worktop space & not very well equipped in comparison to other cottages we have stayed in. Property needs investment as some carpets were badly stained, washing machine detergent dispenser was disgusting. We have stayed in many cottages with Sykes & don't think this property merits a 4 tick rating.

A secluded spot with beautiful views out across Easby Abbey. The cottage had everything we needed. Fully equipped kitchen, good Wi-Fi & lots of towels! A family of 4 we all slept wonderfully in comfortable beds with crisp clean linen. A nice courtyard garden was useful for our pet dog. I did need to block off a few little areas due to my pet being particularly small (chihuahua) but otherwise safe and contained. Lovely hot shower, note, this is a wet room (no bath). Only recommendation would be some privacy glass or blinds in bathroom and upstairs hallway. It’s in no way over looked but does feel quite open in evenings when you need the lights on.
