Guests have had memorable stays at The Old Guard House, praising its beautiful location, comfort, and well-equipped facilities. The property is ideal for family gatherings across generations and is complimented for its cleanliness and stunning views. The hot tub and proximity to local attractions add to the experience, although some guests noted challenges with signage and the strict check-in/out times.
The property is consistently described as clean, with one review specifically noting it was 'lovely and clean'. No negative comments about cleanliness were found.
The location is generally praised for beautiful sea views and proximity to local attractions. However, one review mentioned difficulty in finding the property due to poor signage, slightly impacting the score.
The reviews often mention 'super comfy beds' and the property catering well to all ages, indicating a high level of comfort. One negative comment about the lack of shower caps for rainfall showers slightly lowers the score.
Facilities are highly regarded, especially the hot tub and well-equipped kitchen. However, one review criticises the check-in/out times and the lack of shower caps, suggesting room for improvement in facilities and maintenance.
While guests have mentioned welcome treats such as tea, biscuits, and cakes, as these gifts are not consistently referenced across the reviews, it is not possible to accurately score thoughtfulness. It should be noted that such gestures are appreciated but not guaranteed.
Whitby 5.7 miles. The Old Guard House has been carefully restored and converted into a luxury 5-bedroom holiday home over the last 18 months. The original building has been furnished in the style of the 1940s with traditional wallpaper, vintage furniture, and wall art displaying WWII British propaganda and governmental advice. The west-facing upper balcony has also been restored, allowing guests to enjoy a view of the farmland and coastal bays that run along this sensational coast. An extension in same style as the original building has also been added in order to take full advantage of the location. This contains the kitchen/living area, which has been designed for maximum comfort and lounging opportunities! Equipped with a multifuel burner, large TV and huge squishy sofas this is the ‘mess room’ of the house. Glass doors take up almost one entire wall and provide spectacular sea views. These lead out to the private garden and patio, while discreet hedging and fencing alongside the property offer complete privacy to our guests. The Old Guard House was originally developed in 1941 as an Army station to detect enemy ships approaching Britain by sea in WWII. In 1942, it was transferred to the control of the RAF, becoming RAF Goldsborough. It was part of the ‘Chain Home Low’ radar warning system that was developed to detect low flying aircraft used by German forces. In 1951, RAF Goldsborough was upgraded with an enormous underground bunker, in addition to The Old Guardhouse. In 1958, the bunker was destroyed by a severe fire and was no longer fit for purpose. In 2004, another fire destroyed much of the Guardhouse leaving it badly damaged, roofless, and abandoned until 2022 when restoration work on The Old Guard House began. Fun-filled adventures await you at The Old Guard House.

We were a family of 10 spanning 3 generations and there was plenty of space for everyone. The house was very well equipped, with everything we needed in the kitchen and the bathrooms. The welcome treats of tea, biscuits and cakes were a lovely gesture. The hot tub was great and the sun loungers were perfect for star gazing at night. We saw shooting stars. The location is also brilliant, close to Whitby, Staithes and Robin Hood's Bay. Will highly recommend this house.
