Situated in the Howardian Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, there are walking and cycling tracks in abundance, an ideal way to enjoy the stunning scenery, quaint villages and market towns. Hovingham (3 miles) is the ancestral home of the Duchess of Kent and this picturesque village has a bakery where visitors can enjoy freshly baked bread and pies. The magnificent 18th-century house at Castle Howard, location for the filming of Brideshead Revisited is close by and hosts annual events and concerts, has an award-winning farm shop and beautiful gardens. Local places of interest include Nunnington Hall, Rievaulx Abbey, Eden Camp Museum and Flamingo Land, and you can find out about their opening times on one of the touch screen computers we provide. Helmsley (10 miles), with its Walled Garden, Duncombe Park and an open-air swimming pool (summer season only), has a variety of individual shops, inns and traditional tea shops, and from Pickering (13 miles) you can board the famous steam train and travel through the scenic North Yorks Moors National Park to the fishing resort of Whitby. Along the Heritage Coast there are miles of sandy beaches and smugglers’ coves can be found at Staithes and Robin Hood’s Bay. Greatly enjoyed our time here. Very quiet location with dark skies.. Facilities were very good and enjoyed picking blackberries on the property. No negatives apart from my arthritis which will stop me returning to this lovely property.

So the pros…..amazing location, you feel very isolated but in reality you’re a stones throw from the road with easy access into the lovely town on Malton and all it has to offer. Castle Howard, York, Scarborough, Whitby are within an easy drive away. Views and sunsets from the barn are stunning. The barn itself, rebuilt in about 2010 has a great layout with a good sized kitchen, huge lounge and well proportioned bedrooms. Bathrooms are a bit on the small size due to the head height restrictions from the sloping roof but are ok. Nick was very helpful both before and during our visit and promptly responded to our enquiries. The cons…..well, it’s been well documented about some of the issues in the barn such as the fridge door that doesn’t close properly. In general, the barn is very tired and dated and would benefit from a very deep clean, a program of maintenance to repair the numerous faults with fixtures and fittings, and a replacement of some tired and uncomfortable furniture that is past its sell-by date. The barn has enormous potential and we would love to return, but not in the condition its in at the moment.

Pro: - Big house, with plenty of rooms and outdoor space. The kids loved playing in the garden and picking blackberries. - It is located in the middle of the fields, so very quiet (no passing traffic). - Well located - approx 30min drive from York and other locations of interest. - pub near by that offers amazing pizzas (incl. Gluten free) and supermarkets within 15 min drive.-Loads of bathroom meaning you don’t have to wait in turns. Cons: - not easy to find, there is a sign from the road but it has not aged really well and could do woth being replaced. The GPS will take you through the village, but that is not quite correct, so be careful. - lacking utensils, pans etc. Considering the amount of people the cottage can accommodate. - Fridge door does not close properly. - we could not get the dishwasher to clean the dishes properly (this one might be on us). - there are toys and games provided, but it looked messy and we did not use most of them as they looked like they could have been incomplete (could do with a refresh). This said, we did enjoy our stay and I would definitely recommend this cottage.
