About this property

Eskvale House is a generous detached retreat set beside the River Esk, where rolling hills and flowing water provide a serene backdrop for your stay. Spacious and welcoming, it’s well-suited to families or groups, with flexible sleeping arrangements, roomy living spaces, and a large flagstone garden that is set to be fully enclosed—making it ideal for both children and pets. Step inside to a wide entrance hallway that hints at the scale to come. The main lounge is bright and expansive, its dual-aspect windows framing uninterrupted views of the river and surrounding hills. A dining room—currently being refurbished—will soon serve as the perfect setting for lingering dinners, while the light-filled kitchen is in the midst of a full renovation, designed with modern appliances and plenty of space for preparing hearty meals.

A refurbished boot room will be handy for walking gear, and a ground-floor shower room is also due a full upgrade. The accommodation is spread across two floors, with two spacious bedrooms upstairs, both offering zip/link beds, en-suite bathrooms, and field views. Two more large, versatile bedrooms await on the ground floor, one of which also benefits from dual-aspect windows. Beyond the threshold, guests can unwind in the riverside garden, soon to be enclosed for extra privacy and peace of mind. While there’s no private parking, a public car park with EV charging sits just a three-minute stroll away. Langholm itself, known as the “Muckle Toon,” is steeped in history and surrounded by natural beauty.

Walkers will relish trails through Eskdale, while cyclists can tackle the quiet country lanes. The town has connections to the poet Hugh MacDiarmid, and even to Neil Armstrong, who became its first freeman. From riverside rambles to local museums and nearby nature reserves, Eskvale House makes a fine base for discovering Dumfries and Galloway.

Langholm is a burgh on the River Esk in Dumfries and Galloway. From Mesolithic Man 9000 years ago, through Roman occupation to the notorious Border Reivers around the 16th century, Langholm has much history to share. The town developed around the textile industry, achieving a worldwide reputation for its woollens, expanding its population and earning the nickname of the ‘Muckle Toon’, or the Large Town. Langholm is also famous as the birthplace of Hugh MacDiarmid, the poet and Thomas Telford who was born just outside the town and after whom a road in the town is named. An unused Episcopalian church was converted into the Armstrong clan museum and was visited by astronaut Neil Armstrong in 1972 when he was made a freeman of the burgh. The town also hosts festivals for music, food and arts and the annual Common Riding draws many visitors. Within easy reach is Lockerbie, home to a good selection of bars and shopping facilities, as well as a jazz festival. A short drive from Langholm in the River Esk Valley is the Kagyu Samye Ling, the first Tibetan Buddhist Centre established in the West. As well as offering residential retreats, day visitors are welcome all year round to explore the temple or relax in the peace gardens and grounds.
