Guests say

The Gate Lodge in Latheron is widely praised for its peaceful setting, spacious and well-equipped interiors, and dog-friendly features. Guests highlight the warm hospitality of the owners, the lovely grounds, and the on-site café with delicious cakes. The cottage is considered a comfortable base for exploring the Highlands, with many appreciating the enclosed garden and thoughtful amenities. While a few guests mention dated décor or minor comfort issues, the overall experience is overwhelmingly positive, with many planning to return.

Multiple reviews describe the property as spotlessly clean and well maintained, with no significant complaints about cleanliness.

Guests love the tranquil, scenic location, ideal for exploring the Highlands and enjoying nature. Some mention the remote setting and lack of nearby evening dining, but most appreciate the peacefulness and access to walks and wildlife.

Most guests find the cottage warm, comfortable, and homely, with spacious rooms and good beds. However, a few mention dated décor, a thin mattress, or furniture that could be easier to get up from, which slightly lowers the score.

The property is praised for being well equipped, including unexpected extras like an air fryer and a washing machine. The enclosed garden, boot room, and on-site café are highlighted. A couple of guests mention older kitchen equipment, but overall facilities are highly rated.

Guests frequently mention the friendly, attentive owners and thoughtful touches such as a comprehensive information file and prompt responses to issues. While gifts are not specifically mentioned, the welcoming atmosphere and helpfulness stand out. Please note that any special touches or gestures are not guaranteed for all guests.

The property is accessed via a useful boot room, however due to the age of the property the entrance doors have low head height. The main living accommodation is on the ground floor, with high ceilings, deep-silled windows and views towards the sea, all the rooms are welcoming and decorated in a traditional style. The fully fitted kitchen leads through to the pretty living room. There is an attractively presented dining room adjoining, and a small utility room off the main hall. An original staircase leads up to three generously proportioned bedrooms on the first floor, along with a modern shower room, all enjoying views across to the sea or open countryside.

The Gate Lodge is situated at the start of the ¾ mile private lane that leads up to the main country house. This beautiful tree lined approach lane is bounded by mature trees with a pretty burn and waterfalls meandering alongside. With an abundance of wild flowers, the occasional otter and numerous local deer, it is a lovely walk direct from the cottage. The owners run a small café and local craft business from the main house and visitors are welcome to wander in the 24 acres of grounds and enjoy the surrounding countryside. The immediate area is noted as an area of outstanding archaeological interest. Brochs, cairns and standing stones are all found in the locality.

There are numerous places of interest and sporting activities in the area. The nearby village of Lybster has an interesting past, built at the height of the 19th-century herring boom. With its pretty harbour and beach it is well worth a visit. This coast has some of the most outstanding beaches to be found anywhere. Fishing, golf, horse riding, kayaking, sailing, mountain biking and wildlife watching are all enjoyed locally, and puffins, seals, dolphins and whales are seen around these coastal waters. We are of a certain age now and require furniture, beds sofas etc that are easy to get off .The bed wasn't comfortable. The garden is a good size .and all grass.....they say dogs are welcome but they have a sign up to say ..please don't exercise dogs in the garden ! There is nowhere to walk dogs unless you want to walk up a very uneven and rough path up to the house and their cafe .The equipment in the kitchen are old and therefore not nonstick anymore.
