This character cottage in Penegoes gives six guests a wonderfully atmospheric base for exploring the Dyfi Valley, with a historic watermill, millpond and riverside setting adding plenty of interest before you have even left the grounds. Continue the scenic views by joining the Glyndŵr’s Way from the doorstep and into the surrounding countryside, while the Dyfi Valley Way opens up longer routes in a quieter corner of Mid Wales, and can be joined at Machynlleth (3.5 miles). If you follow the valley far enough, it brings you towards the coast, and you’ll reach Aberdyfi and Ynys Las (both within 14.5 miles) for water sports and fresh seafood overlooking the ocean. Pick up your essentials, and maybe stop for a tipple at one of the shops in Machynlleth’s famous market town.
Period features come alive as soon as you step into this superb stone property. Its 15th-century heritage remains intact as you can catch a glimpse of the water wheel and internal cogs. Overhead, the exposed beams transport you to years gone by while you use the well-equipped, sleek kitchen before settling around the solid eight-person dining table.
