Big Cottages & Group Accommodation in Southwold

Southwold is Suffolk's beer town and a lovely spot for a group break with friends. Delight in the malty aroma escaping out of the Adnans Sole Bay Brewery mingling with the sea air throughout the day. Beer has been made in Southwold under various guises since 1345 and the pubs and restaurants are unsurprisingly fiercely proud of their local drink. Snap up a deal on one of our Southwold cottages and you could be enjoying a cold beer before you know it.

The town also has a lovely beach and some wonderful independent stores and restaurants to enjoy on your family break.

What our customers say about their holidays

  • Mr Karlin - Verified booking

This is an excellent choice for a family let. Southwold is a lovely place to come, full of charm and with great amenities, even if after a couple of days you feel they should re-name it 'Adnamsville'. Location of this property couldn't be better -- a few minutes' walk from the beach and the shops. Though in the town centre it's not at all noisy (except for the seagulls, of course). Having two bathrooms is a bonus, and there's an outside shower as well for sandy feet. The kitchen is well equipped -- one of the best we've encountered in many years of holiday cottages. Nice lounge with large screen TV and Wi-Fi worked fine. Decor is a bit bland but if you're not looking for 'period' charm it's light and comfortable, which is all we wanted. The only downside to this property is the parking. The space is inside the property -- taking up nearly half the back yard -- and is awkward to manoeuvre into and out of. Access is via a sliding gate and once you're in there's very little room. We have a VW Passat estate and it barely fitted -- we couldn't open the boot once the gate was closed. If you have anything bigger this would be a real issue and should be signalled in the details. One more point about the seagulls. They really are a feature, and occasionally a nuisance. If their raucous presence bothers you, then think again; and the outside dining table and chairs, and the car, occasionally got spattered. Such are the hazards of seaside holidays. We had a great time notwithstanding!

This was the worst holiday cottage we have ever rented in 30 years. The house is dirty, from the cobweb and resident spider on the right as you enter the rear door, to the cobwebs and dust in bedrooms and a spider suspended from the ceiling in one of the bedrooms. The windows and surrounds have not been cleaned in years and the front door and white surrounds makes the building look as it has been abandoned. The internal doors are highly sprung and it was not possible to keep them open. A sure health and safety hazard if small hands were to be trapped. I myself have returned home with bruises on both arms when the doors have closed heavily on me after opening, and then springing shut. The doors into the twin bed room are almost impossible to open, they are so tightly sprung. The whole house smelt damp and musty and this was compounded by the inability to open any of the widows. They all appear to be locked, and when you pull down the secondary glazing panes the cobwebs and dust behind have been there for a very long period. Having scented plugs in some sockets does not help and in the downstairs bedroom there is a dehumidifier that was left running indicating some sort of problem with damp/mould but no note to indicate what.

We’ve enjoyed another family holiday in Blackshore House.

I draw your attention to several actions so that you have the opportunity to fix the items for your next guests arrive. The property was presented very well with three exceptions. Firstly, was the state of the stainless steel mesh oven shelves. The top oven was particularly bad with most of the bars covered in black deposits and grease but the lower oven also not clean. We bought a steel wire scourer (good idea that provide one given all the SS pots and pans) and I spent best part of half an hour trying my best to clean them all using CIF, before we used the oven. It’s not perfect but a lot better and I suggest they are all cleaned professionally. We also discovered that the front door handle latch is jammed and we were told a work around. Your assistant offered to get the handle unit replaced but we were happy to make do. I suggest you now get it fixed. The other item is that the outdoor chain of lights blew with a bang coming from one of the first sockets which have no bulbs. Obviously needs attention.

The house was lovely - exactly as described and shown in the pictures online.

I booked the house for a weekend to relax with girlfriends and the house is perfectly proportioned to do just that. We had a lovely evening eating and drinking at the large kitchen table and a relaxing afternoon in front of the log burner after a long walk on Southwold beach (15min drive away) and through the gorgeous town. Beds were comfy and the house was clean, well presented and designed. I would absolutely re-book for a visit with my children. Plenty of things to explore locally (including the lovely beach) and so many good restaurants to chose from! The only thing to consider is that it is very hard to find a taxi locally. Most of the numbers in the guest book were no longer in service and despite our best efforts to find one we had to drive to our dinner reservation and limit the wine!

Overall, a good base to stay in Southwold.

Great space, clean and tidy with everything we needed in the property. Unfortunately, the WC in the master suite took about 30 minutes to refill so that was a nuisance. The air con in the games room wouldn't run and we couldn't get it to work, so we didn't use that space. The bin situation is UNBELIEVABLY TERRIBLE for a holiday let catering for so many people and almost Third World-ish. On arrival, there was no black bin and the blue and green regular bins and double commercial style bin outside, were absolutely rammed to the top with every kind of waste, so we resorted to taking our rubbish into town. There were/are 2 foot high weeds outside the house on the pavement, which could surely have been removed by the Landlord rather than hoping the Council will do it!
