Why visit Lincoln for your group trip?
The small medieval city of Lincoln has been an establishment since pre-Roman times. Thanks to its position upon the River Witham, Lincoln was a strategic place to build a fortress.
Lincoln Castle was built in the 11th century by William the Conqueror and boasts two mottes and an impressive wall walk. You can wander around the walls and take in the stunning views surrounding the castle. The castle also houses one of the four remaining copies of the Magna Carta.
For more history, use the Roman Trail to plan a walk around some of Lincoln's Roman roots. You can see the Roman Well, the Colonnade, Newport Arch and lots more.
Steep Hill is a lovely shopping street on, as the name suggests, a steep hill! It's so steep there's even a handrail at the highest point. But the shopping, architecture and views are worth the sore legs you might experience the following day. The street connects the newer part of Lincoln with its historic area and walking the street almost feels like you're stepping back in time.
On Steep Hill you'll find lots of independent shops and great places to stop and have a spot of lunch.
Lincoln Cathedral sits at the top of the hill. It's one of the biggest and most beautiful cathedrals in Europe and is packed with history and importance. You can buy a ticket to venture into the cathedral, or just walk around the grounds.
High Bridge is a Tudor-style section of the High Street carried over the River Witham. The bridge was built around 1160 AD and the buildings on it from the 16th century. This atmospheric landmark was nicknamed The Murder Hole in medieval times as it was the spot where bodies tossed into the river would wash ashore.
The museums in Lincoln are a great way to take in a spot of culture and learn more about the city's history. The Museum of Lincolnshire Life, the International Bomber Command Centre, Lincolnshire Road Transport Museum and the Victorian Prison are all worth visiting during your group break.
The Collection is a Lottery-funded museum dedicated to showcasing life in Lincoln from the last half a million years. It's a fascinating museum full of discoveries from the first human species and the Stone Age all the way to the present day.
For a relaxing afternoon, head to Lincoln Arboretum. This Green Flag-awarded park is beautiful and boasts lakes, fountains, statues and a pretty bandstand. Bring a picnic along and enjoy a bit of downtime.
