Guests say

Steepe's Place is a charming, traditional Irish cottage set in peaceful countryside, ideal for those seeking tranquillity and a taste of rural life. Guests consistently praise the friendly and helpful host, Betty, as well as the cottage's cleanliness and authentic character. The property is well-equipped for self-catering and dog-friendly, with beautiful views and easy access to local attractions. Some guests note that the cottage can be cold, with extra charges for heating and electricity, and that certain facilities are dated. Overall, it offers good value and a cosy, memorable stay for those who appreciate rustic charm.

Most guests found the cottage spotlessly clean, with comfortable beds and tidy living spaces. A few mentioned minor issues such as dust or cobwebs, but these were exceptions rather than the rule.

The cottage is praised for its peaceful, rural setting and proximity to scenic walks and attractions. Some found it a little tricky to locate, especially after dark, but overall the location is highly regarded.

Guests appreciated the comfortable beds and cosy atmosphere, especially with the open fire. However, several reviews mention the cottage being cold, hard mattresses, and the bathroom being far from the bedrooms, which affected overall comfort for some.

The cottage is well-equipped for self-catering and has good kitchen facilities, but some equipment is dated or basic. Issues with heating, water pressure, and extra charges for utilities were noted. The yard is secure for dogs, but outdoor furniture is lacking.

Betty, the host, is frequently described as exceptionally helpful and accommodating, often going above and beyond for guests. While some guests mentioned the absence of a welcome pack, gestures such as providing extra firewood or mattresses were appreciated. Please note that such thoughtful touches are not guaranteed for every stay.

About this property

A delightful, detached cottage, at the foot of the Ballyhoura Mountains in Glenosheen, 2 miles from Ardpatrick. Over 400 years old, and steeped in history, this original farm cottage has traditional thick stone walls, a stunning open fireplace, and a cosy, inviting atmosphere, that evokes a real sense of having stepped back in time. The bedrooms boast original iron bedframes and the cottage provides stunning views of Castle Oliver and the rolling countryside. Time can be spent enjoying the traditional Irish music of the Ardpatrick village pub or the many local outdoor pursuits including horse riding, fishing, and mountain walking. An ideal base for any holiday and just a 90-minute drive from Shannon Airport.

Originally built by a colony of Palatine settlers, the village of Glenosheen is located below the Ballyhoura Mountains and is just two miles from the village of Ardpatrick - named after Ireland's patron saint. St. Patrick himself is reputed to have built a church on the hill that overlooks the village - the remnants of which still exist today. The market town of Kilfannane is also close by and boasts the title of the highest town in County Limerick as well as an excellent outdoor education centre for school, youth and adult groups, offering a wide range of adventure sports and courses. These include canoeing, rock climbing, hill walking, horse riding and abseiling, giving visitors a wide range to choose from. County Limerick is rich in history and is packed with castles, museums and medieval churches.

Property description is ambitious. More badly heated and poorly furnished small house than “traditional Irish cottage”. Calling an unheated large porch with a dated washing machine in it a “utility room” is a bit of a stretch. Same with the “dressing room”. If you’re under the impression that you’ll have a lovely dressing table to sit at while you prepare yourself for the day, expect to be disappointed. It’s a linen cupboard with no window, clearly occasionally used as a spare bedroom. The equipment and furnishings throughout are dated. It seems like most of the equipment has come from a charity shop. Even with the heating on full, the fire lit, two oil‑filled radiators as back‑up and the electric blanket on the bed, all running overnight, I woke up freezing and quickly realised that wasn’t going to change, and despite having booked for 6 nights, I stayed for 1 and found alternative accommodation elsewhere the following morning. Finally, no welcome pack on arrival. On the morning I woke up there, I had to scrabble around and found a leftover teabag and a sachet of Coffeemate. I’d woken up freezing and couldn’t even make a decent cup of tea, let alone have breakfast… time to go elsewhere. Third time using Sykes Cottages, very disappointing. On the upside, lovely location.

I can only say that the cottage is amazing. It’s authentic, comfortable, spotlessly clean and has an excellent kitchen with everything needed. It is animal friendly, could not tell any dogs had been in. Enjoyed the local cats greeting me as came and left. Putting on the heated blanket before bed and sleeping in the cool bedroom made for amazing sleep. I was able to travel different directions to see Cashel, Limerick, some of County Cork and even a calf auction in the next town. I also had a few quiet days in. The fire place is a central part of living area and had it going each day which provided lots of hot water with the boiler system. Betty pops over to ensure everything is as needed. I absolutely adored the cottage, and can’t wait to come back, love to bring friends to enjoy it with me.
