The barn is set in the most amazing location, with wonderful views from the grounds outside. It is set with other farm buildings which are holiday lets too. Personally for me I found the barn to be too dark, very little natural light, to come in from the bright sunlight of an autumn afternoon was a little depressing. The largest window was in the lounge which looked into the garden of the cottage next door. The chimney in the lounge possibly needs sweeping as the smell of soot was really quite strong. I also found the bedroom too dark with only one skylight and low lighting. We didn’t use the garden as the access was via the wooden stairs leading to the bedroom and the dogs didn’t like the slippery steps. The barn is feed by a treated natural water source off the fells so during heavy rain the water can appear darker but is perfectly safe, the darkness is caused by the peat of the fells and when we stayed the bath water looked and smelled similar to a watery malt vinegar. We would like to return but maybe to one of the other properties next time. The walks from the door are amazing, and if like me you like a swim Devote Water is just 1.5 miles away great for a pre-breakfast dip! We left the car at the barn most days and walked down into the Eskdale Valley which is beautiful with several pubs to choose from for lunch or venture slightly further to Wasdale. The owner was also very helpful when the heating stop working on our first night and sent someone out straight away to make sure we were ok. The barn is full of character and is much bigger than the photos make it out to be.

A lovely cottage - slightly more remote than I realised but it's in a beautiful spot

We had a lovely peaceful few days. Yes, the location is remote but I wouldn’t let this put you off. With basic planning around getting provisions we coped just fine. Eskdale valley is truly stunning. We felt that if anything went wrong with the property it would be sorted out. All in all highly recommend a stay. I’m hoping we might make it back soon.
