Neptune, is a delightful traditional cottage refurbished to make a super family holiday cottage with a lovely private garden, the cottage has a stunning south facing location right on the beach front in the picturesque village of Rockcliffe. The safe, sandy beach is a great spot to enjoy a picnic and read a book in the sun, or perhaps partake in swimming, rock pooling, paddle boarding, kayaking and sailing.

The sun lounge has fabulous, uninterrupted views across the bay to Rough Island and Hestan Island and is an ideal place to watch wading birds or to relax with a glass of wine as the sun sets, before millions of twinkling stars appear.

3 of the large bedrooms (upstairs superking and triple room and downstairs twin) all have seaviews - lie in bed and listen to the cry of oystercatchers or lull yourself to sleep as gentle waves lap on the shore.

An extensive network of footpaths from the door of the cottage, give access to countless walks through countryside, woods, and wildflower meadows, with numerous opportunities for photography or to pause at one of the many secluded seats where you may be lucky enough to spot red squirrels, deer or woodpeckers. At low tide, walk over to explore Rough Island – a National Trust Bird Sanctuary or follow the coastal footpath to secret smugglers' coves with wonderful views over the Solway to the Lake District, offering excellent sea fishing opportunities and the chance to spot porpoise, sea otters and seabird colonies (don’t forget your binoculars.) A perfect evening stroll is along the Jubilee Path to the popular sailing village of Kippford, where you can sample local ales or fresh seafood on the waterfront at two excellent pubs, or during the daytime enjoy afternoon tea by the sea at the Ark Café and gift shop.

Shop at local farmers' markets for fresh produce and visit our characterful local towns: Castle Douglas, the food town; Wigtown, the book town; Kirkcudbright, the colourful artists' town with its lively fishing port and historic Dumfries, home to the celebrated poet Robert Burns (Auld Lang Syne) and J.M Barrie author of Peter Pan. There are also extensive mountain bike trails (including the world-class 7 Stanes - accessed 1 mile from the cottage), excellent sailing, kayaking, horse riding and many golf courses, ranging from the 9-hole par 3 course at nearby Cragieknowes to the championship links course at Southerness - one of the top courses in the UK.

Mountain walkers will delight in panoramic views from Screel Hill, Bengairn, Criffel and Merrick (2765ft) or enjoy the challenge of locating landscape artist Andy Goldsworthy’s “Striding Arches”, which are situated on the hilltops near Cairnhead. Keen fishermen will relish the numerous tranquil lochs and rivers which support some of the most diverse fish populations in Scotland (permits for Barean Loch are available from the well-stocked licensed shop at Colvend - just one mile from the cottage.)

Galloway is known for its wildlife reserves, including rspb Mersehead, WWT Caerlaverock, the scenic Red Kite Trail and the International Dark Sky Park in Galloway Forest, where the Milky Way is visible to the naked eye. The gulf stream that warms our shores allows sub-tropical plants to grow. Visit glorious gardens at NTS Threave, Logan Botanics, Glenwhan and Castle Kennedy; explore captivating castles at Caerlaverock, Drumlanrig, Threave and Gatehouse of Fleet; discover ancient abbeys at New Abbey (Sweetheart), Dundrennan, Glenluce and Whithorn Priory. Belted Galloway and Highland Cattle roam freely close to the cottage, while further afield museums and craft galleries with delightful tea shops abound.

This magical beach front cottage in the sunny microclimate of Rockcliffe captivates everyone who visits, making happy memories. It’s easy to see why guests choose to return year after year.

We cottage was well located on the beach at Rockcliffe with a good views. We used the dining room for meals as we found the kitchen arrangements inadequate. Neither benefitted from the view. The sun room had great views but was uncomfortable. The parking at the property was very challenging and would have been impossible if the next door property had been occupied as the drive was shared. The public parking was minimal.

Fantastic place. Amazing location. Very well equipped.and comfortable. All that we could have wanted. Ruth was very helpful with advice about the local area increasing the heating when the weather became inclement.

Beautifully situated cottage, very well presented, and really well stocked too in terms of things you'd need for a week's break - including dishwasher tablets, milk, soap. It is sometimes just these little details which you notice!
