What our customers say about their holidays

  • Julie - Verified booking

We were very dissatisfied with the condition of The Abbey.

It was extremely dirty when we arrived. One of the beds was completely full of black dog hair, inside and out! The entire house was filthy. Full of cobwebs, dust and dirt on all windowsills and shelves, with dead flies and bugs etc. Bath had scum mark, showers had a lot of black mould, the dishwasher was virtually breathing... the list is endless and we have many photos. The owner called the cleaning company they use who arrived a couple of hours later and she did the best she could but was also appalled at the condition of the property and apologised, she too took photos. We complained about the lack of wine glasses and the owner purchased some and brought them over promptly. This was Christmas break and when about to prepare our Christmas meal we noticed all the baking trays were unusable, they were beyond rusty and also mouldy. I called the owner again and he promptly went to purchase replacements. The cutlery drawer was full of crumbs and dirt and utensil drawer was full of black dust and dirt... it was very unpleasant. We had to put everything through the dishwasher and disinfect the drawers before we used anything. In all we were very uncomfortable there and felt the high rent paid for that time of year was completely inappropriate given the condition of the house There was a hot tub but we felt it very risky to use from a hygiene perspective given the condition of the rest of the property, so it was a perk we didn't benefit from. The stress and inconvenience we experienced and could have really done without. We would have left but with other members of the family arriving from the next day we didn't have anywhere else to go. Such a disappointment.

This is a potentially lovely house in a delightful town but our stay was spoiled because firstly: when we arrived at 4pm the house had not been cleaned.

The beds were covered with the previous visitors' towels and bedding. The toilets were dirty and there was urine dribble on the floor of one toilet. Secondly, one of our predecessors had left a note listing 9 issues, all were still unaddressed. I also had to refix the downstairs toilet seat, not something one ever wants to do, let alone today whilst Covid is still spreading. The manager explained she had tried to phone me but my phone was off and that the cleaner 's car had broken down, which is unfortunate but she was nothing like as apologetic as I would have expected. We went out for two hours when the cleaner arrived but the surfaces could not have been satisfactorily wiped in so short of time and the place did not smell antiseptic on our return. Previous visitors had drawn attention to the broken bath selector in the bath/shower, it was still broken during our stay. This was something that particularly mattered to us. As it was the water from the shower drained painfully slowly, leaving a dismal tideline. In fairness the manager did offer to come to see us but one of our party has a medical condition which meant that they could not have accepted a visitor into the house during Covid. I left a note of all of our concerns for the manager. A week has passed and she has not replied to them. Accidents and breakdowns happen but I would have expected a better service from a reputable company.

Abbey Cottage is very beautiful, the size of the garden is huge & filled with many plants & trees.

Our 3 dogs loved running round the Cottage & playing ball. The thatched roof is beautiful with its wolf & crown perched on top. Inside is a large beautiful kitchen filled with everything you could wish for, I never wanted to return home. Three large king-size bedrooms with lovely crisp clean bedding, two with en-suites bathrooms & a downstairs WC. The dining room adorns an old table & chairs in fitting with the period of the property. The lounge has two comfy sofas & an old wooden chest as centre piece. All rooms have a TV, so there's no reason to fight over the remote! There are two staircases, one easily accessible from the lounge & another that resembles mountain climbing by the kitchen. You will not believe the slope of the floors upstairs until you see it! Apart from the kitchen & bathrooms, which are modern. The rest of the property is kept more in keeping with the original features. The vast conservatory is so beautiful, I'd love to go back during the summer months to enjoy it! In the gardens is a meditation room that lights up beautiful at night, a summerhouse with a pool table, a table tennis table in the garden, a playroom wooden house & a Shepherds hut for extra guests. We had the best relaxing time, just remember to take slippers for the cold hard flooring & wellies for the morning dew outside.

This is our 3rd visit, and always we found the property meticulously clean and well presented on arrival.

The house is decorated and maintained as a home rather than a rental, and you get a distinct feeling that the owners have not spared their best. Beds are comfy and the living room was a great place to crash after a long day on our feet. Sofas are squishy and soft- and the kids loved snuggling in the blankets that are kept in the box upstairs. Kids also completely taken by two of the bedrooms being connected by a storage space! The house is brilliantly placed in that it is within walking distance of all of Bury’s local attractions. The Abbey gardens, the cathedral and Wooster’s which is actually better than the French patisserie we have here in London! It’s a great house to use a base for going to Cambridge for the day or beaches on the Norfolk coast. The lovely part is walking into a warm and inviting home, that has all the conveniences of home. Large kitchen and dining room. Perfect home away from home!

We recently had the pleasure of staying in this lovely cottage, and it was everything we could have hoped for to ring in the New Year.

Nestled in peaceful parkland gardens, the setting felt like a private sanctuary, offering us a true escape from the hustle and bustle. The cottage itself was beautifully appointed and comfortably accommodated our group of six. The layout was perfect for spending quality time together, whether lounging in the cosy living area or enjoying meals in the well-equipped dining space. Every detail had been thoughtfully considered to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable stay. The gardens were a particular highlight, providing a serene backdrop for morning coffee and afternoon strolls. Even in winter, the surrounding landscape was stunning, adding to the charm and tranquility of our getaway. For anyone looking for a peaceful retreat with friends or family, this cottage is highly recommended. It’s an ideal spot to unwind, reconnect, and make wonderful memories.
