Stithians is a charming Cornish village, offering a tranquil escape with a variety of activities and scenic beauty, close to Redruth, Helston and Falmouth. Try out the water sports on offer at Stithians Lake or enjoy fishing for trout at the Angling and Water Sports Centre. Nearby is Kennall Vale Nature Reserve, a hidden gem filled with lush woodland, babbling streams, and remnants of an old gunpowder works.

It’s an ideal spot for nature lovers, with picturesque walking trails and opportunities to spot wildlife. A short drive away lies Truro, Cornwall’s only city, offering a mix of historical and cultural experiences. Marvel at the grandeur of Truro Cathedral, a striking example of Gothic Revival architecture, and stroll through the bustling streets lined with boutique shops, independent cafes, and galleries. Truro also boasts an excellent farmers’ market and Lemon Street Market, perfect for sampling local produce and unique crafts. For beach enthusiasts, the Cornish coast is within easy reach. Head to the stunning beaches of Falmouth, such as Gyllyngvase Beach, known for its golden sands and clear waters.

Alternatively, visit Porthtowan or Chapel Porth for dramatic cliffs and excellent surf. These beaches are not only perfect for relaxing but also offer breathtaking coastal walks along the Southwest Coast Path, where you can immerse yourself in Cornwall’s rugged beauty. The area is a walker’s paradise, with trails ranging from easy countryside strolls to more challenging coastal hikes. Discover the Bissoe Trail, a multi-use path connecting Portreath and Devoran, offering scenic views of Cornwall’s historic mining landscape.

Popular with cyclists, if you don’t want to bring bikes, they can be hired; there is a halfway spot for refreshment at the pub before reaching the beach with its welcoming café. Whether exploring the serene beauty of Kennall Vale, soaking up Truro’s vibrant culture, or unwinding on sandy beaches, Ponsanooth and its surroundings provide a perfect mix of relaxation, adventure, and quintessential Cornish charm.

Let’s start with the positives. The property itself is a lovely-looking cottage. It is beautifully decorated and wonderfully furnished. The local pub is around a 10-minute walk away, is very friendly and serves lovely food.Unfortunately, that’s where the positives end. I’m afraid the bad points far outweigh the good.On arrival, we were forced to park our cars on a grass verge at the side of the road. There is no dedicated “private parking for two cars” as advertised. Instead, there are five spaces outside the front of the grounds, apparently shared with other guests. If the property becomes busy, you simply have to hope there is a space available when you return. There are also no signs on the front of the property displaying the address or confirming that you have arrived at the correct place. When you arrive in the pitch black and pouring rain, all you can see is a sign saying, “Please do not park in front of the gates.”The advertised hot tub is not actually available. It had been removed due to the hosepipe ban, something we were only informed about by email the night before our arrival. This was extremely disappointing, particularly as the hot tub was one of the luxury features that influenced our decision to book this property over others. The living room log burner also has an issue with the chimney pipe, which appears to be missing. This results in a terrible soot smell filling the room, while soot falls down over the burner itself and onto the carpet.Upstairs, the mattress in the main bedroom is extremely uncomfortable. We woke up every morning with significant back pain. To make matters worse, the en-suite bathroom had a ghastly smell coming from the drains, which was genuinely unpleasant. And if you happen to see a strange person walking around outside at night with a torch, don’t expect any reassurance from us—we are still not sure who they were or what they were doing. There was also no welcome pack or even any small Cornish treats, something we have received at many other holiday properties. After driving for over eight hours, even the basics for a cup of tea would have been greatly appreciated. This was particularly disappointing considering there is a lovely cheese shop just five minutes down the road that could easily provide some wonderful local treats. The advertised views were also far from the picturesque Cornish scenery we had imagined—lovely hills, countryside and perhaps a few cows. Instead, our conservatory view consisted of a large shipping container, a static caravan and Heras fencing. There was also very little for children to play with or interact with, making the property feel less family-friendly than we had expected. Finally, if you need to contact the owner, be prepared for excuses and, in our experience, arrogant and dismissive comments rather than helpful customer service.Overall, the cottage itself has plenty of potential and is beautifully presented, but unfortunately the number of issues we experienced meant that the negatives significantly outweighed the positives. We left feeling disappointed, particularly given the expectations created by the listing and the features advertised. Safe to say our family will not be returning.

Mill House is a lovely building which has been decorated to a very high standard. The beds are very comfortable (I think brand new mattresses) as is the large sofa in the lounge. Mill House is situated within a cluster of holiday cottages, all very pretty, a lovely setting and the two friendly dogs were a bonus! The hot tub was very popular with our children. The view from the back is one of two halves! To the left, its a beautiful meadow as far as the eye can see. To the right is a large storage container and some rubbish - not quite so idyllic. The chickens and even the Cockerill were nice to listen to. The accommodation is for 7 people however only 4/5 chairs are provided in the kitchen and only 6 chairs for the outside patio table. The patio chairs are too low for the wooden table which made eating outside tricky. Either new chairs are needed or a lower patio table. The only real issue we experienced was the smell of the drains. This was particularly bad in the ensuite bathroom. We did make contact over this and the maintenance man did pour liquid down the drains on two occasions, but it only solved the problem for a short while. There seems to be a serious issue with the drains which should be resolved. There is not a lot in Stithians so I don't think we would return. However, it was a good location if you want to access both the south and the north coast in Cornwall.
