Holiday Cottages In Lizard

The Lizard is a peaceful town on the southern coast of The Lizard Heritage Coast. With the dramatic coastline and exotic plants, you could be forgiven for thinking you had been transported to a different county altogether. It is an ideal location for a cottage holiday.

The Lizard is a great spot for relaxing and escaping the hubbub of daily life. There are numerous beaches dotted along the coast; from the much-loved sands of Kynance Cove to more pebbly and hidden delights. The South West Coast Path extends in both directions and provides plenty of walking opportunities. If you enjoy bird watching this is a great place to go as it is home to the elusive Cornish Choughs. It's an amazing place for a holiday; enjoy a cream tea and watch the waves crashing on the cliffs.

Wolf Rock Cottage is steeped in history. and you can't help but wonder who has walked along the huge stone flags in the hallway or climbed the stairs to the lookout tower. Its location at the Lizard Lighthouse provides stunning sea views and, of course, the beauty of the lighthouse at night - and the foghorn, which off a few times. The cottage itself is very well equipped- tt's perhaps not luxurious but it certainly has everything you could need, the beds are very comfortable and the property was lovely and warm. A radio in the kitchen or sitting room would be nice but it is available via the TV. The lookout tower is really what makes this property. Aside from a little fog (more of that later) we had superb weather so didn't get to storm watch from the tower. Our only criticism would be that the seating in the tower isn't very comfortable and not conducive to sitting up there for any length of time. Another comfy chair or two would help people make the most of it. Some things have been removed due to covid precautions (cling film etc) so perhaps the website/arrival info could be updated to advise of this. There are areas of paintwork that are flaking off and could do wiht a repaint and neither of the fans worked in the bathroom, which will cause issues in time - the property just seems a little unloved in areas and it's a wonderful place. On to the foghorn - It's not like the foghorn sound of my childhood (a deep tuba-esq note) but more of a mid tone, which took a while for us to fathom out what it was at first, thinking it was a low oil warning or carbon monoxide sensor! It was only on opening the front door that we realised it was the foghorn. We managed to sleep through it and the earplugs worked and you do get used to it. This is a working lighthouse so do not stay here if you can't cope with the foghorn! All in all a superb cottage and we would love to return- and have no hesitation in recommending it to others.

Expect totally utilitarian. This is a building built for purpose. Reminded me of my Edwardian school as a child with its corridors and classrooms. However the cottage is perfectly equipped with everything you will need and a fabulous breakfast food selection. The tower is an unusual feature, but you carnt get on the roof, which is such a shame as the views are amazing. We didn't get the fog horn ,but as a working lighthouse watching the lights sweep over the sea at night was so cool. Amazingly the windows are positioned so the light doesn't shine in! Such an unusual place to stay, views of seals and birds from practicality every window, and a nice village in walking distance. There were a few downsides however. The master bedroom with the best view is up a long staircase, while the nearest bathroom is downstairs and along a long corridor. Not for those with weak bladders, or wobbly legs. There is a small twin room between the 2 bath room's, but it looks at the car park not the sea. Also when we were there, one of the bathrooms had such bad smelly drains we had to keep the plugs in and the door shut! The bathrooms could also do with more shelf space to put things on. Note also we thought we'd look around the heritage centre after checking out at 10am, but it doesn't open till 11 in the morning. Overall we had a very enjoyable stay and Kynance beach nearby was the most beautiful beach I've ever visited despite the crowds. The lighthouse is such an iconic building on a rugged clifftop at the most southerly point on the mainland. Definitely out of the ordinary.

We stayed for a week to celebrate 45th and 50th wedding anniversaries. The cottage was charming but we had some initial issues which we tried to relay to our housekeeper. We were unable to contact her at any time even to get the key code. We had to phone Rural Retreats direct. A housekeeper in the next cottage helped to replace glasses and a broken toaster,(the cottage sleeps six but there were not enough wine glasses or champagne glasses for 6) and supplied extra towels as the heated towel rail was faulty. We have stayed with Rural Retreats before and had a marvelous time, but definitely felt that the cottage was not as clean or well kept and the crockery etc was not checked. We also had a very damp and peeling wall in our bedroom which should have been repaired before our visit. This was a trip we were all looking forward to, the rental price is not cheap and we felt a little disappointed that we had to spend precious time trying to sort out problems. Rural Retreats did contact us to check that things had been rectified, but we did not want to have someone repairing a wall whilst we were in the cottage and it would have been preferable to have everything in place before we arrived. We had the impression that it was definitely 'end of season'. We love the Lizard and made the most of our stay, but hope that our comments will be noted for future reference. If there had been a complete check on the cottage between guests we would have had no cause for complaint at all.

This was our 4th holiday at Wolf Rock, our first with Rural Retreats. We had a wonderful holiday but unfortunately standards seem to have slipped in the cottage. When we arrived the first thing I had to do was to clean the dead flies off the window frame in one of the bedrooms . I then cleaned the mirror in the lounge and the TV screen, I think they'd been wiped with the same dirty cloth. There was dirty cutlery and cooking utensils in the drawer and dirty crockery and mugs in the cupboard. During our 2 week holiday we were not offered any clean bed linen. We were bought clean towels on day 10 of our holiday - and had to wash some of them before we could use them. The welcome hamper of local produce was lovely. I'm not sure what I could have done with 2 lemons. Salt and pepper would have been more useful. Of course we could have tried to contact the housekeeper during our stay but we were on holiday and I did not want to waste my holiday time or have any conflict whilst I was away. The written information asks you to respect the housekeeper and not to contact her in the evening unless there is an emergency - none of these issues were an emergency. Several of the windows were in a poor state of repair. Our experience would not stop us staying on the Lizard again, it is a very beautiful part of the world.

Not as nicely decorated or interior designed as the other lighthouse cottages in the South West we have stayed in - and we have stayed in all of them frequently over the past 13 years! The living room is particularly grim and uninviting- so much so that we didn't sit in there. The sofa is a bright blue colour, there is a rug of another colour completely that looks as though it's been taken from another property altogether. Nothing matches in the room and it feels cold and not comfortable. There are no nice touches eg themed framed prints and lamps and the room really lets the cottage down. Likewise the upstairs bedrooms have a more utilitarian feel than all the other lighthouse cottages we stay in eg thin short curtains, magnolia walls. Basically there are nice elements to this cottage but overall it doesn't seem to have had any professional design interior design input, that make your usual cottages special places. They have a 4 star hotel feel and this is lacking in places at Wolf Rock. It may seem like a small point but its one of the main reasons we always book with Rural Retreats.
