What our customers say about their holidays

  • Tanya - Verified booking

This was meant to be a very relaxing family holiday.

We found on arrival that the lodge was in very poor condition. There was pet and human hair in the carpet and in the draws! The property had a very offensive smell of a stale/mould. The cupboards in the kitchen gave off an awful musky smell. Myself and my disabled mother spent the first day cleaning the whole place and yet the property owners failed to have a decent working hoover or alternative dust pan and brush forcing me to clean the floor on my hands and knees! The hoover smelt so bad when switched on the bag has clearly never seen the light of day! It was like 50 pairs of old smelling socks! Needless to say I am extremely dissatisfied with the experience of our stay. No one should have to have gone on holiday only to have to spent the first few hours cleaning! I had to buy my own air fresheners to help keep the bad smells at bay. We were keen to leave the lodge on a daily basis but sadly the weather was not on our side and we spent many a rainy day in the lodge. The other thing is if it rains you have nowhere to dry your washing. A clothes horse would have been really handy! The place on a whole was not very inviting. The only decent thing was the hot tub. However I will point out that two of the head rests were missing and one day the owner left his bag of chemicals lying around and forgot to switch the hot tub back on. I have a young 3year old who luckily didn’t get hold of these chemicals. The owners were made aware of all of these matters but nothing was done to compensate us. The outside bbq was rusty and full of old coal which again the smell was just horrendous, safe to say we didn’t use this but it would have been nice to have had the option given it was advertised as having a bbq. The sofa bed is just awful! It is made up of springs and no padding, this is not fit for anyone to sleep on and my daughter complained each evening from how uncomfortable it was! On the last day the owner called and left me a voice message to say a new WiFi router was being installed. We came back to the lodge to find a new router but no instructions on what the new password was so we had no use of the telly or WiFi connection which was very disappointing! The mobile number I had been emailed wasn’t connecting and the office was closed. All in all a dry disappointing stay at Keylow and I would like to be compensated for spending a week feeling miserable in a holiday lodge with misleading pictures and information on your website.

Overall the cottage was warm, lots of hot water and we liked the character.

The beds were really very comfy with lovely Egyptian linen. The kitchen and front room were both spacious and comfortably fit the 6 of us, and our dog. The bath was a welcomed addition in the very spacious bathroom. We also welcomed the mince pies and wine on arrival and being allowed to check in earlier, as we had a lot of stuff (Christmas). Unfortunately, there were a few things that for us, let the cottage down, which was a real shame. The shower leaked through the floor boards, into the kitchen below. When we contacted Jenny, she was aware of it - this was pretty astounding - to let a property with a known issue. We understand cottages have character, but having 6 people showering, you loose your sense of humour mopping it up on a daily basis. Not everyone likes a daily bath. The cottage was pretty dusty, especially the carpet in the front room. Being that we were at full capacity, and it was Christmas, furniture was moved about to allow space for kids to play and for everyone to sit around together for the TV and board games. This moved a lot of dust about, and unfortunately my son suffers with dust allergies. You couldn't open the windows in this room as they were locked with a window lock key. For 6 people, there needs to be more glassware and mugs. We used all the plates, but some of these are too big and do not fit in the dishwasher. The kitchen was a nice airy space but in the cold Cornish winter the windows were incredibly difficult to open (again this was mentioned to Jenny). The back door (patio) was warped and difficult to open/lock and definitely needs some attention. A check out of 9am is incredibly early and something I had missed upon booking. We therefore left a day early, so we didn't have to get up at dawn to leave at 9am. Overall, we enjoyed having a change of scene as a family. We had some lovely walks to Helford Village. The cottage is in a little village, which was really quiet. Unfortunately, I feel it was overpriced for the issues mentioned above, as it wasn't as relaxed as we had hoped and therefore we wouldn't stay again.

I intend to write to you more fully.

We expected something very special for the price of this property and we did not think we got that. I think that the owners are resting on their laurels in that the position of the property is exceptional, and the fact that there is parking justifies the very high price. Whilst the kitchen is well equipped it is so badly designed as to be almost unworkable with the fridge down a bottleneck and almost impossible to get to. More to the point is the fact that the shower in the twin bedded room is simply not fit for purpose. It is not possible to turn it on and not be in the cubicle. You have to run through the gamut of freezing cold water to get to the desired temperature and the power of the shower is way too strong for the tiny size of the cubicle. In the other en suite bathroom there is no mirror … nor are there any hand rails to help with the large step down into the bathroom. We failed to get any water flow in the family bathroom. We also discovered that the Draconian check in and check out times are a throw back to Covid and other properties have reverted to a more sympathetic pre-Covid times. I know a lot of people in the village of Portscatho many of whom have rental properties and they could not believe the price. The fact that the price was reduced by £1000 because it was not let in the preceding week left us feeling pretty fed up. I understand that this is a question of the owner’s taste but the art work on the walls is simply ghastly and totally inappropriate for a rental property. It looks like the work of a student on crack cocaine; it is unsettling and horrible. All in all we were disappointed in what we thought was going to be a spectacular property.

We loved the cottage, the decor, the facilities: that big bath downstairs, good kitchen, shower, telly, garden, fairly close to the sea, well insulated, but having extra heaters, the whole feel of the place!

A couple of little niggles: the washing machine smelled of fungi - I did a hot wash in it after, so hopefully sorted, might need a wash with some vinegary water. The drying machine came in handy after a rainy day! What is nothing to do with the cottage: narrow roads, often single, so a bit stressful driving, but mostly ok, but drivers to be aware. Would be useful to have some more information about: local shops, how to turn on the hot water for the bath (that it needs about an hour, otherwise switch in cupboard by washing machine), we figured out everything else. Tv worked well, and loved the safe and big garden (needs mulching and feeding with organic matter in the autumn, but lovely). Extra bonus to have a freezer as well (we left a frozen chips behind for somebody :D), and left a couple of blue, white and gold plates (they are old, but hope could be used in the decorations). Didn't dare to touch the nice Willeroy Bochs ones, but loved looking at them, the others were great to use and pretty, the whole place has a lovely atmosphere. We were very lucky to have had it for a better price, apart from the long journey from the Midlands, would love to be back someday. Also a great base for visiting several lovely places around. Thank you!!!

    First of all.

... WOW! The lovely owners have put their heart and soul into creating this stunning holiday home. From the front door, running through to the furthest point of the home - you'll find everything you need for a fantastic holiday stay. We stayed for a weeks stay, and we have returned back home spreading the word of how nice this place is. Lucy and Mike are genuinely nice owners.... and when a problem arises (as they do In all aspects of life) they deal with it In such accompanied haste. The beds = extremely good night sleep The underfloor heating (seperate thermostat to each room) = excellent as a family we all run at different temps. (Award winning design). Stylish wooden stair gates to bottom and top of stairs = have an inquisitive 2yr old this was a life saver. Showers = best rain fall showers. **JUST EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS PLACE = EXCELLENCE ☺️ if your after somewhere centrally located in cornwall that's a VERY SHORT drive away from shops... beach's... then this holiday home is perfect. Can't wait to return... well worth the near 6hr drive.
