What our customers say about their holidays
Caroline - Verified booking
The cottage was spotlessly clean upon arrival.
The instructions for everything were very good and helpful. The main bedroom and twin bedroom were excellent. The small double was extremely small and didnât make for a very comfortable sleep, in all honesty. I nearly rolled out of bed, and thereâs hardly any room at the sides to get in, and Iâm quite a small woman, so anyone larger might find it tricky. The owners have clearly made the best use of the space, however, so this is merely to warn any party of multiple adults that they may also feel squished in that room. The bathroom at the top appeared to have some mould, which is no surprise as ventilating it might be tricky, particularly as the bathroom is at the front looking onto the street which makes opening the windows more difficult. There is a fan which we used. Iâm only commenting on this so the owners are aware and can nip it in the bud before it creates any damage to their lovely property. Our boys loved the top room, which has fab views of the boats beyond. The cottage is in a fabulous location as itâs quiet and within very easy walking distance to the Co Op and all the myriad of shops and restaurants in Salcombe. I would recommend painting one of the bottom steps outside in white (the steps closest to the house) because although we had the outside light on, we still couldnât see that the step was angled differently and we stumbled on it. I would most definitely stay again in the cottage if we were a smaller party size. The open plan lounge and kitchen work really well and give a lovely feeling of space and comfort. I thoroughly enjoyed our stay there.

This hadn't been our original choice of holiday home - our original booking was cancelled by Sykes (apparently due to the owner selling the property) 5 weeks before we were due to go.
Thankfully, this one was available for the week we had planned around (perhaps due to a cancellation?) and we were relieved that it all worked out in the end. The lower rating I've given for recommending is based on this experience of being put in this position by Sykes in the first place, rather than on our experience of the holiday we had in the end. The property wasn't the most pristine we've ever stayed in but it was still lovely, spacious and perfect for our needs - a pretty, slightly elevated location overlooking the estuary; a parking space (2, actually); a brilliant location for town shops (including Co-op with long opening hours) and restaurants; North Sands beach a little distance away but still walkable for us; close to the main road out of Salcombe for when we ventured out in the car. Just a couple of small issues around waste. First, we were disappointed that there were no recycling facilities at all at the property. The instructions said there were some in a nearby car park but all we found was a bottle bank. We did take a lot home with us as we're not used to putting so much in landfill. The other thing was the instructions on the notice board that were very strict about putting rubbish in green bags, but our bin had been lined with a black bag and only black bags were provided in our welcome pack and under the sink. We mentioned this to the Coast & Country team when returning the keys - either the instructions are out of date or green bags need to be provided. Overall, we loved Salcombe and had a brilliant stay at 6 Combehaven.

Unfortunately Lanapoule is quite tired and would really benefit from redecoration and in general a freshen up especially for the high level of rent charged.
There was no welcome pack on arrival which we were quite surprised by as we have in the past received generous welcome packs when we have paid much much less to stay at other holiday properties. But what we really didnât expect was to be left with no hot water by the second morning of our stay because the owner seemingly didnât set it to come on. In the process we wasted a morning of our holiday waiting in for a gas engineer which never needed to happen. Then at 8am on the Wednesday of our stay we were woken up by some strange scraping noises which we thought was coming from the flat immediately below Lanapoule and on further investigation it was the window cleaner. Total lack of courtesy on the part of the owner not to let us know and even more ignorant to allow the window cleaner to call so early. Better still arrange this on changeover days or when the property is unoccupied. On the few positives there was onsite parking and our bed was very comfortable. However taking into account Lanapouleâs âtop of the hillâ location in relation to Salcombe town centre and that it can sleep 6+ guests, as advertised, it was no where near worth the £1400 we paid for a week in early June. That said we shall not ever consider a return to Lanapoule at anytime in the future..

This was our 11th stay at Combehaven but first time in this property.
The property felt tired and in need of refurbishment. - Faux leather dining chairs were peeling and leaving flakes of plastic on clothing - Broken blind in small bedroom - Extractor fans in bathroom and en-suite were caked in dust and in dire need of cleaning - Black mould on ceiling, grouting and shower door seal in en-suite - Shower head in en-suite was hanging out of the wall - Extensive settlement cracks throughout the property indicating that it has probably not been redecorated since new (2004?) - One cracked window pane and a number of failed double glazing units - Many other more minor issues Overall impression of a bare and soulless property in need of attention Sykes have rated this property as 'outstanding' which leaves me in some doubt as to whether Sykes' ratings can be trusted in future and whether or not we would choose to use Sykes again. We were looking forward to a relaxing few days away but the property did not lend itself to that and we felt we needed to spend as little time in the property as possible. We have photos to support out claims should they be required.

We regret to say that there were many small but important issues we had with Dory cottage.
The whole house needs a good clean especially the oven and oven dishes. Dishwasher was full on arrival. No dishwasher tablets as advertised. The freezer section of the fridge was so close to the wall we could only open a little way. Battery missing from remote. Window in back bedroom not fitted securely and doesn't seal shut so every noise heard(especially the bells). Chairs very uncomfortable even with every cushion available. Doors are difficult to open/close. Front door looks like someone tried to force handle which is loose and is difficult to lock. Some pillows stained and no protectors on(noticed when leaving). Perhaps we have been spoilt as all the previous holiday homes we have stayed in provided dishwasher/washing tablets, loo rolls etc. Sorry to be so negative but there are positives. The house is in a great position in Salcombe. Close to shops and walks. We would stay in Salcombe again but not in this particular property.
