Holiday Cottages In Dent

The quaint village of Dent is deep in the Yorkshire Dales. Surrounded by the unspoilt National Park on all sides this is a tranquil place for your next cottage holiday. It's ideal for exploring the Dales and getting away from the hustle and bustle for a week.

Dent is near the banks of the gushing River Dee, and the Dales Way runs past here also. This long distance path is an impressive undertaking, and even if you can't walk the whole thing it is still a lovely place to hike along for an afternoon. Despite being a small village it has an interesting history; known for knitting and the famous Adam Sedgwick. The Daledent Visitors Centre has plenty of information about the lives of those who lived here years before. It is a beautiful and unspoilt village to visit.

What our customers say about their holidays

Reading the description, and seeing the pictures this would be a beautiful and perfect place, However.

... This is a house riddled with damp! Every external wall had signs of mould. In most cases this appears to have been cleaned up however in the small bedroom it had been ignored. When we first saw the mould on the wall alongside the bed, my wife wiped with her fingers and we both choked on the spores as they were disturbed. In the corners behind the bed the walls were black as was the upper corner around and behind the picture. With my grandchildren arriving in a few hours we decided to clean off the mould from the walls and move the bed away from the external wall. It took about 30 minutes to rid the room of the black spores but the house should never have been let out in this condition. There is nowhere on this review to show pictures but disgusting and unhealthy describe this adequately. In our pre-arrival brief, we were advised that "it is an old house" and " could get damp" therefore we were requested and (dutifully complied) to, run the fans after shower and open bedroom windows daily. This is probably the owners way of getting around this but showering and sleeping, is not the cause of the damp in this house. The underfloor heating is set on all day which compensated for this a bit and we left all the room doors open during our stay to allow air to circulate throughout the house. In the front double with the west facing side wall there were patches of what looked like slime on the wall. I didn't clean this off as it appeared to be bubbling the paint and was afraid that trying to remove this would take the paint off the wall. Mould on solid surfaces such as window frames can be easily removed but not sure if the cleaner even considers this, particularly as it looks like they never get cleaned. The shower has been removed from the main bathroom and this was not highlighted either by the owner or Sykes. With only one shower in a 4 bedroomed house to accommodate 7 guests there is quite a challenge in the morning with everyone queuing to use the only shower in the master bedroom en-suite. Had we known this, we would never have booked this house for our needs with 4 adults and 2 teenagers. In places, some aspects of the house cleaning is questionable. The marks and soiling in the microwave, plates in the cupboard , tea coffee & sugar canisters, and the greasy surface of the cooker hood made us question how much time is spent on preparation for guests. I'm 6'2" and the thick dust on the top of the washer in the downstairs closet caught my eye every time I went in there, not to mention the dead flies on the window cill. The brewery has been closed since last year and everything around is a mess with empty beer barrells strewn all over the place. The outside and back of the house area is a tip. There is a half full drum of CIP100 which is a very corrosive chemical sitting in front of the brewery. That needs to be disposed of by a specialist chemical disposal company and at least stored securely until then. If I apply the blinkers and ignore the above, this house is in a very peaceful location, has great interior space and an owner with impeccable taste for furnishings and interior design . The WiFi is great and is the only way to use your tech. If you want to get away from the world, there is no mobile signal from either EE, O2 or Vodafone at the house. It is with the blinkers removed that we feel compelled to say we could not recommend Hollins due to the damp and mould, only having one shower, the attention to preparation cleaning, and the untidy area around the brewery.

The cottage is in a good location just a short walk from Sedbergh.

There are lots of places to visit nearby all within reasonable driving distance. The property description is slightly misleading as it also includes the property next door in the initial photo so overall it was smaller than we anticipated. The lack of outdoor space was not an issue for us and we knew this before booking. We had read on some reviews that people were given a welcome pack but we did not receive one on our recent visit. There were 3 packs of rather sad looking hotel biscuits in the kitchen hamper but nothing else. We presumed there would be a freezer of some sort in the kitchen but that’s not the case. That’s a basic for any kitchen but there wasn’t even a freezer box in the fridge. The kitchen itself is OK for 4 people but it would be very tight for 6 eating in there. The top floor bedrooms had no heating during our stay and despite us reporting this and being assured somebody would call to look into it, nobody turned up. We left the key in the key-safe every day as requested. Whilst the weather was OK it needed some heating on, so this was not pleasant as the radiators were literally stone cold. It’s like they weren’t even connected to the boiler. It was very disappointing to be told it was going to be attended to and for that not to happen without even a call back. The bathroom configuration did not work for us as both bathrooms are on the 1st floor meaning those staying on the 2nd floor had to come down a floor to use the facilities. That may not sound like too much of an issue but the stairs are really steep and narrow. They need more grab rails or ropes on the stairs to make them more secure as losing your footing is not difficult.

This is a new letting in an old cottage which the owners have refurbished to a beautiful standard.

We were honoured to be their first guests! The living room has THE most comfy sofas, plus a spare chair and big footstool, so plenty of room for us all to be cosy despite the weather (we had storms Dudley and Eunice while we were there), and the gas/log burner effect fire made it all the cosier. And it's a good size too. The bedrooms have super comfy beds and there's plenty of cupboard storage for your things. The bathrooms (one is ensuite) are modern and at the same time in keeping with the old cottage. The kitchen is well equipped - as we as a group are still wary of Covid we didn't want to eat out, and it had everything we needed to prepare all our meals. (there isn't a freezer compartment if you want to have ice cream, but there's 2 places to buy icecream in town) The owners welcomed us by text, and were very approachable. - I feel like we have new friends. They also emailed us a PDF with lots of info about the cottage and the area. Parking was no problem - room for at least one car outside and the others very nearby. It's a short walk (5 mins) into the Main Street of Sedbergh, which has independent shops, cafes and pubs/ eateries (next time!), and books for sale everywhere. The surrounding area with the Howgill Fells, access to the Yorkshire Dales or the Lake District, has everything for the outdoor enthusiast (one of our family did get out high each day despite the weather). There's also lovely riverside walks for the less fell-fit. 3 Settlebeck Cottages was exactly what we needed for our first full family stay together under one roof in 2 years, and hopefully we'll come back again.

Wow! Thank you so much Chris and Sally (and Florence!

) What a fantastic place! We came as our extended family for a week to celebrate my parents’ 60th wedding anniversary. Oakdene was perfect for us all despite the huge age range - 4 and 9 to 84 and 87! Oakdene is a fabulous house, beautifully fitted out. Very tastefully decorated and super comfortable sofas and beds. Not only did the bedrooms work brilliantly for us - and they are all of an equally high standard which was great so no-one felt they were being short changed, and three bedrooms were on the ground floor which my father appreciated - but the living space was also excellent which is not always the case. We could all 21 of us eat comfortably together. We could also all hang out in the lounge together - or spread out into the morning room, cinema room, snooker room, kitchen dining room or the various outdoor spaces, the hot tubs being a favourite!! And the setting is just stunning! What amazing views from the house and grounds, sunsets from the lounge and dining room and patio and on a clear night the starry sky was unlike anything we have seen for some time! Fairfield Mill just 100 yards away is a bonus with tea room and 3 floors of beautiful arts and crafts and artist studios. And of course the Yorkshire Dales are simply beautiful, as is the Lake District close by. It was hard to leave at the end of the week! All 21 of us would have no hesitation in highly recommending Oakdene Country House. And as hosts, Chris and Sally were exceptionally friendly and helpful, promptly dealing with any requests or issues. Thank you so much! It was so wonderful!!

    What a gem!

This was a superb property for 10 adults and 10 children for a week's family holiday. it's possibly the best equipped self-catering accommodation we've ever had. It has been beautifully decorated and sympathetically upgraded and tastefully furnished, and is extremely comfortable. The kitchen is fantastic, with two quite astonishing induction hobs. Cooking for 20 was a breeze (we tended to do 10 kids first and 10 adults a bit later), and there is ample fridge and freezer space. The two full sized wine coolers can be used for all wine, beer and soft drinks freeing up fridge space for groceries. The bedrooms are all comfortable with lovely en suite bathrooms. Add in a full-sized snooker table, tabel football, two high tech hot tubs, and a TV room with an up-to-date 4K 65 inch TV and you'll barely every want to go out! However when you do, the surrounding countryside is well worth it and the nearby mill's tearoom serves great cakes. The views across fields to the hills are truly lovely. Improvements? Tricky! The only thing we thought we needed and didn't have was an icecream scoop. Some outdoor games equipment for children would add to the enjoyment perhaps. A big thank you to Chris and Sally (for whom nothing was too much trouble) for providing such a fantastic property. We hope to return next year, as it's hard to imagine finding somewhere better for a family like ours.
