What our customers say about their holidays

Please find below our findings at 60 Swinney lane, Belper On arrival we could not stop the smoke detector from blipping and spent hours trying to get an answer from emergency phone numbers in the information leaflets.
Only to find that the people who had the numbers were in Japan! We eventually managed to speak to someone at Sykes who e mailed the owner. Eventually the owners daughter arrived and changed the battery. I must say that the young lady in question was very polite and helpful. The reviews stated that they received a welcome pack on arrival. All we were left were a cupboard with half used items, jams, sauces and other food items. The freezer was situated in a brick built shed the door of which was rotten and was hard to open. Once we did get into the freezer it was covered in debris that had fallen from ceiling. On opening the freezer we found three packets of half eaten ice creams! Towels provided we not much bigger than a t towel and there was no spares in the blanket box, unfortunately this was empty. Inside we found the floors to be dirty as was the table in the dining room. On inspecting the oven we found that it needed a good clean as was the grill pan and two metal trays left in the main oven. The shower cubicle needs re grouting and the shower water does not get very hot. The outside terrace area needed sweeping and tidying, the mat by the back door looked Jurassic and is falling apart. The BBQ had been emptied but the grill was filthy. All in all we were very disappointed with our stay. This is a very lovely cottage that has the potential to be a great holiday location.

Firstly the positives, great location with access to lots of what the Derbyshire Dales has to offer.
The place was very clean and the bathrooms clean and modern. The living room area was nice and comfortable and having 2 pubs in the village gave us a nice choice. Secondly, the negatives, the kitchen is quite small and not great when you're trying to prepare a meal for 5 adults and it could really do with a bigger fridge. The corkscrew was broken, which we didn't realise until we tried to use it which put everyone into a panic as you can imagine. The ladies thought a hairdryer would have also been a nice touch. The biggest issue for us was the single bed mattresses. These are fine I imagine if they are being used by kids but for adults with older bones they weren't very comfortable. We did have a lovely stay though and would recommend the place if you only intend to have kids in the single beds and plan to eat out most evenings. Thanks

We left after one night.
Overwhelming smell of smoke from the broken chimney stack. White stone walls in the sitting room are grey with it. Mould spores everywhere, behind beds, corners, windows etc. Leak in utility so floor had puddles. Sheets hadnât been changed. Stained and wrinkled so called owner and told where sheets were (locked in eaves, sitting on floor with mouse traps and mould on walls). Mould in eaves wardrobe. Dirty kitchen, oven. Uncomfortable beds. Vintage one unsafe as not bolted together tightly and moves. Sofa dirty and cushions paper thin. Had shower and flooded downstairs toilet out and that was the last straw. Obviously happened before as ceilings have old water stains. Got refund for remaining 6 nights but really upsetting. Took photos and shared with Sykes. Only saving grace is the glorious location.

Lovely cottage with a beautiful view from the kitchen window over the valley.
Cottage has everything you need, very thoughtful having handwash at every sink, even shower gel in bathrooms and plenty of toilet roll. The kitchen has tea, coffee, sugar etc, and a lovely welcome basket including milk and bread. The outside has steps up to a seating area with bbq which would be great In summer time. Fully enclosed area which was perfect for our dogs. Valley view is a lovely base to visit Matlock, Derby Dale, Bakewell with some lovely scenic walks. Just down the street is a footpath where you can walk the dogs with a great view of the valley. Itâs a short walk into the town of Belper and there are plenty of places to eat locally. Parking is easy on the street outside the property. Thank you for a lovely few days.

We had a fabulous time at Barley Cottages.
Amazing views and pretty much every detail considered by the owner. The kitchen is soo well equipped with everything you need to cater for a group of 6 plus a dog! The location is perfect for getting out on immediate walking trials, or a little mooch into town. The weather was pretty dismal for our stay though, so no long hikes as intended, but it was magical watching thunder and lightning storms across the valley from the summer house. The garden is spectacular and a lot of work must have gone into it. I would say the garden isnât suitable to let a small dog off lead in my opinion and my only feedback would be to possibly point this out in the booking details. We would love to stay again.
