Many of the town's best attractions are linked by a walking route, so it's easy to explore by foot. Skipton Market is one of the most popular attractions. Normally held on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday you'll find lots of gems from local produce and crafts to clothes and plants.
For more shopping, head to Craven Court Shopping Centre located just off the high street. This gorgeous two-tier shopping mall was created from a 16th-century theatre and you can still see the original stone walls and marvel at the ancient architecture.
Craven Museum and Gallery makes for a great few hours. It's a small and eclectic museum that focuses on the area's history, archaeology and art. Treasures include fossils, retro clothing, unusual art and one of Shakespeare's first folios.
Skipton is positioned on the Leeds-Liverpool canal and one of the nicest things to do is head out on a barge ride along this 127-mile canal (the longest in the UK!) Some boat trips even come with afternoon tea, so you can take in the sites while enjoying a delicious cuppa and a piece of cake.
Skipton is a historic town recorded in the Domesday Book of 1066 and its 900-year-old castle was originally built from wood. It wasn't until the 12th century that William le Gros reinforced it with stone to prevent rebel attacks from Scotland. This turned Skipton from a poor and vulnerable village into an important town.
The castle is one of the most complete medieval castles in England and it's lovely to walk around the castle and learn about its history. You can see many original features and explore the banqueting hall, kitchens and bed chambers, as well as wander around the pretty grounds.
For a beautiful walk, head to Castle Woods, which lies in a valley along the north edge of the castle. There are three walking routes to choose from, ranging from easy to moderate.
Just over 20 minutes from the town centre is the stunning Parcevall Hall Gardens. The late Sir William Milner designed the gardens and features are local and exotic specimens with a breathtaking backdrop of the Yorkshire Dales. It's also appeared in several TV shows including Escape to the Country and the Hairy Bikers.
Don't miss a trip to Bolton Abbey, just 15 minutes from Skipton. The abbey and the village take their names from the ruins of the 12th-century monastery known as Bolton Priory. The atmospheric ruins hold a fascinating history and are surrounded by 30,000 acres of beautiful countryside and footpaths - ideal for a picnic.
