This idyllic town is surrounded by mirror-like lakes, dramatic peaks, stunning countryside and all the charm you'd expect from a quintessential English country town.

If you're planning a holiday with your favourite people, whether for a special occasion, a birthday celebration, or just an excuse to spend time with your family, our large holiday homes in Keswick are just what you need to make your trip complete.

Why choose Keswick for your holiday?

Keswick's location makes it the perfect base camp to explore the incredible natural landscape that defines the Lake District. While you might visit Keswick for its stunning natural surroundings, you'll fall in love with the charm and character of the town itself.

In easy reach of the town, you'll find walks to Bowder Stone and Derwentwater. If you're looking to scale some peaks, you can't go wrong with the nearby Coledale Peaks, offering a fairly challenging climb but well within the scope of most amateur climbers.

The pretty market town of Keswick is surrounded by picturesque mountains and Lake Derwentwater is just a ten-minute walk away. This picturesque lake measures eight miles in total. You can enjoy a bracing walk around it, taking in the spectacular views or go on a lake cruise. Fancy combining the two? Just hop on and off the boat at the different landing stages and take in the diverse dramatic views.

Keswick is a town full of beauty and English charm. With plenty of cafes, tearooms, restaurants, traditional pubs and shops, you'll fall in love with the laid-back atmosphere. Visit Keswick during May and you can take part in the Keswick Mountain Festival, a popular event that combines hill runs, open water swims and triathlons with some excellent live music.

For more top attractions in Keswick, check out the wacky Puzzling Place for a world of optical illusions, the Theatre by the Lake for a spot of culture and the famous Pencil Museum (which is way more fun and interesting than it might sound!)

What our customers say about their holidays

We have visited Braithwaite numerous times but had not stayed in Burnside Cottage before.

It is in a lovely location very close to the centre of the village. It is a beautiful looking cottage with a quirky and interesting layout. We especially liked the Caracole staircase and utility room. The cottage is well appointed and comfortable. The utility room is a real boon for coming and going. The downstairs shower is excellent though we did have to replace a broken bulb and clean the lampshade as it was very gloomy in there when we arrived. The master bedroom is roomy and light, and the double bed is comfortable though given the space available, a larger bed would have been nicer. We didn't use the lounge much but there were plenty of chairs, tables and lights though one was wobbly. The kitchen worked well with a dual-fuel cooker and dishwasher. A fridge in the kitchen plus a second with the freezer in the utility room was a bonus. We appreciated being able to set the week’s heating schedule as many properties with Hive these days don’t allow you to do this. The cottage garden is beautiful, we loved sitting by Coledale Beck for our lunch and to relax in the afternoons after our long walks in the mornings. The old mill stream running across the garden was a nice surprise. The outdoor table and chairs were really useful as was the summer house when it got a bit chilly. There were a few niggles which if addressed would improve the cottage: 1) No washing up bowl that we could find anywhere - this was quite annoying. 2) No flow straighteners in the kitchen taps - the water runs back along the underside of the taps. 3) A short bath. 4) The OK button on the TV remote barely works making the remote hard to use. 5) A chair in the master bedroom would be useful as the dressing-table mirror is low. 6) Thanks for the ‘welcome pack’ bottle of wine but milk, a few teabags and perhaps a packet of biscuits would be more useful after a long journey. 7) The shortest dishwasher cycle was 2.5 hours but unusually you are required to empty it before leaving. This means putting your final breakfast wash on no later than 7:20am. To wash by hand would be less hygienic for the next guests. None of these niggles would prevent us from booking again in the future.

The owner was very helpful at first, even going out of her way to find me a large cooking pot as the ones available at the cottage were rather small.

However things quickly turned sour when the boiler stopped working, at which point she accused us of "messing with the settings". When asked how soon she would be able to arrange for it to be fixed she said that she simply didn't know because there isn't always someone on site, given how remote the cottage is (the folder at the cottage stated that the owners live on site and are always available for assistance). Anyway I ended up doing my toddlers bath using boiled water from the kettle and the rest of us had cold showers. This was late August and the weather was wet and windy with temperatures averaging 10-15. We woke up the next morning to find hot water and someone on site fixing the boiler. It was all sorted out in a few hours and we had the heating up and running as well. While I appreciate that the issue was fixed promptly, I found the owner attitude rather unprofessional and rude. To throw around accusations at paying guests without evidence is not appropriate. Also, the listing stated there would be central heating. There was no mention that it would be on a timer and would only be running for a few hours in the morning and evening. This should be made clear, as it can get quite cold in Lake District, even in summer months. Other than this, the cottage is in a lovely location, was very clean and had everything we needed for our stay.

The cottage is absolutely gorgeous and was really comfortable for us during our stay.

It was really well equipped as well with little extras not all holiday cottages have, which were very much appreciated. The downstairs toilet seat was broken when we arrived and I told the lady who called to make sure we had got in to the property without problems, and she said it would be fixed on the day we left which was fine as there were plenty of other toilets for us to use! I note that others who have stayed in the cottage since say the seat was still broken. The other seats were a little wobbly as well, especially the one in the en suite. The only other little issue was that the website provided for details about the cottage didn't work so there was no information about the cottage or bin day etc. The bins were overflowing and I felt bad about leaving our rubbish by the side of the bins opposite the house but I totally appreciate that this was down to a strike by the refuse workers rather than anything else. I see someone else has said that the beck at the side of the house is a little noisy, but we loved the sound of the water and frequently sat outside to enjoy it. Those things aside, we really loved the cottage. So much so, we have booked again for next summer!

  • Sally - Verified booking

    The cottage was lovely.

Clean, spacious, great location. A couple of caveats though: 1. There is no information in the cottage providing the essentials, such as what day to put bins out. A website was provided for cottage information, but it doesn't seem to exist! 2. The rushing sound of the beck next to the cottage takes a bit of getting used to - this may be a consideration if you like your bedroom window open at night and are a light sleeper. 3. Three of the toilet seats were very wobbly (in fact one was completely off when we arrived). We did report this to Sykes and were told someone would come to make repairs, but no-one ever did. 4. The bathroom locks are stiff. The one on the en suite to the master bedroom is particularly dangerous - please take care as one of us got locked in and it took us over an hour to rescue them - no end of tools failed to work. These locks require attention, but weren't sorted during our stay. 5. It would be good if one of the double beds could be converted to twins. Sorry if this all sounds negative, but I think it's important some of these issues are addressed. Despite the above, we DID love the cottage and greatly enjoyed our stay there.

We had a fabulous stay at Ladstock Cottage.

The position was perfect for a wonderful walking holiday. Everyone was very comfortable and the layout and setup of the cottage enabled a very relaxed stay. We were very grateful for previous feedback which gave us a ‘heads-up’ on the things that we needed to be alerted to - the sticky bathroom door, no ceiling lights over the lounge area, the outside security light and the heating system - these things had not been corrected by the time we arrived. Fortunately we weren’t too bothered by the lights in the lounge (which would have been helpful) and the bathroom door, but the security light outside would have been useful as we arrived in the dark after a long journey beset by accidents and road closures. Fortunately we had experience of different heating systems. However, we loved Ladstock Cottage and would love to be able to return. We went with our son and his family - four adults, two children and two dogs. It must be hard for local people in the village with people coming and going but I have to say, the neighbours and people we met from the village were very friendly and welcoming.
