Big Cottages & Group Accommodation in Ambleside

Ambleside is yet another one of the Lake District's jewels. This scenic town located at the head of Windermere is an excellent spot for a last minute cottage holiday. Windermere is the largest lake in England and is a thing of real natural beauty. Perfect for a last minute escape, Ambleside has everything that you will need whether you are looking for a group trip or fun with the whole family.

The Lake District is famous for its outdoor activities, and Ambleside provides a fantastic base for those that are looking to get in touch with their inner adventurer. Hiking, mountain biking and water sports such as canoeing, kayaking and waterskiing all are readily available in the town. Being on Windermere, it would be foolhardy not to take advantage of the stunning cruises that run regular tours of the lake. Ambleside is well catered for tourists and as such has all the great local pubs, independent shops and fabulous restaurants that you could desire on your large cottage holiday in the Lake District.

This is a semi with little outside lounging area and no outside privacy at all The photograph of the front of the house misleads as half of the property shown is not part of Holly Cottage.

The photograph is angled so you cannot see the entrance door to the other property which is just a few feet away. Also the photo of the area to the front of the property with table and chairs give an impression of some level of privacy. Once again it misleads as it also serves as an area for the other part of the proprty where they also have their table and chairs just feet away from yours with absolutely nothing to divide them. We have to pass between their seating area and door everytime we go out and come back as there is a shared acces route. The outside area containing the table and very uncomfortable plastic chairs is very small and is the only outside area connected to the house, there is no play area for kids, no area to sunbathe or have a barbeque, no area to hang washing, it is the smallest external and least private area we have ever had in a Sykes property. Evening meals and private socialising outside is impossible as you are doing it within near earshot of neighbours. Both parties had a very awkward first night sat outside whispering. The next door property consists of a 2 bedroom ground floor flat, with our third bedroom on top of it, their seating area is directly below our third bedroom, the noise they make we can hear in the bedroom as well as from their flat below. They have a baby and sit outside from 7.00am in the morning making it impossible to sleep or relax in our own bed. I expected Sykes to be more open about the properties shortcomings and not attempt to mislead in their website marketing of the property, i would not have booked it if i had had known we would have no privacy at all and be so near to the noise from next door. I am very surprised no other visitors have mentioned this, which makes me a bit suspicious as to what feedback Sykes cottages allow on their site, it will be interesting to see if this one makes it onto their site.

I spent over a month in this property, between the 17th of Nov to the 20th of Dec, and found it to be one of the most comfortable bases to explore the lakes in over 6 years of visiting the southern area.

The views from the front windows are unsurpassable, informing me each morning how to proceed in negotiating a fell. I came here to walk, climb, hike, and fulfil some bucket list summits, I also wanted peace and quiet to read and write. This property is the perfect base to explore the fells, with only a 20 second incline to reach the front gate (if able bodied). Just far enough from the town centre to experience peace and quiet, yet close enough to take advantage of on-the -doorstep access to walks, shopping, and good food. The house is warm, well equipped, and well placed. The smart TV, internet and central heating were fantastic, and the mattresses were amongst the most comfortable to date. Thank you for providing one of the most comfortable and well positioned places to stay in the South Lakes. I have visited many, and Luke's Hoose will remain a firm favourite. I will add that putting the bin out is no mean feat, so would recommend this property to those who are fit and able bodied. And during storm Darragh the top floor front bedroom window rattled enough to wake the dead and was very cold. However, this is a small criticism, and I would recommend this property to all. I absolutely loved my stay here and will never forget it. Apologies for forgetting to remove my lichen and moss collection from the dining room table! Thank you.

This is a lovely cottage with lots of room, especially upstairs.

It has good taste decor and felt some of the previous comments were unfair as it’s a lovely place. Of course there’s some very minor wear and tear, it’s a rental cottage. Quite difficult to find initially as a bit of a labyrinth of roads so would benefit to have a whatthreewords address included too. The patio area isn’t secure which wasn’t clear so quite difficult when you’ve got a dog but at least isn’t a busy road. We actually had a deer walk straight past the house at one point. i have rented many cottages and my main criticism is that compared to all others, very little provided. No hand wash or any other products or cleaning items and not enough toilet roll to last a week and no kitchen towel or anything. Every other cottage I’ve been to always leave a welcome ‘gift’ of cakes and wine and bits and bobs and this just had a small cleaning kit… something else would be a nice touch. Bed in king size room lumpy and uncomfortable but other than that there was no issues with any of the rest of furniture. Wi-Fi doesn’t work in main upstairs bedroom either and the alternative code given didn’t come up as an option. These were all minor issues though and the overall cottage and layout was lovely and wouldn’t hesitate to stay there again if staying in Ambleside.

Very Comfortable Stay with Parking Access and Building Work issues: The cottage was lovely, extremely comfortable and well-equipped.

Its location is excellent and only a very short walk down steep narrow roads into the centre of town. We reported two maintenance issues found on arrival as soon as we could to help Lakelovers get them sorted for future bookings. The spacious kitchen and living room were quite dark (September), so a good reading lamp would be great in the living room. The awkward parking space was compounded by tradesmen's vans needing moved to let us out. This was because the very pleasant owner of the immediately adjacent St Anne's Court cottage, also managed by Lakelovers, was visiting with others to do external maintenance work throughout our five-night stay. Unfortunately, this meant we could not open our door to the communal gardens and sit outside. Car access to the communal entrance gates was difficult. This was partly due to a large white van parked alongside other vehicles, but jutting out and blocking the easier of the two steep tracks up to the gates. Overall, a great short break, especially if you don't intend to use your own car to get out and about.
